MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota swimming is set to close out their annual training trip with a triple dual meet against Hawai'i and Drury. The Gophers return to the lanes after a month away from competition, with the meet beginning at 4:00 p.m. CT.
GOPHERS IN THE POLLS
In the latest TYR/CSCAA Top 25 polls, the women rank as the No. 16 team in the nation following a 4-1 dual meet record to start the year. The men jump into the top 25 at No. 22 following a first place finish at the Minnesota Invite.
PADINGTON BREAKS 200-YARD FREESTYLE SCHOOL RECORD
Freshman Mackenzie Padington is already writing her name in the record books in her first year with the Gophers. The Campbell River, B.C. native set a new record time in the 200-yard freestyle touching in at 1:44.15. The Minnesota-record time currently ranks as the ninth fastest in the nation and third in the B1G.
B1G WEEKLY HONORS
Not only did she set a new school record in the 200 free, Padington was also named B1G Freshman of the Week back on December 6 for the second time this season. Posting three NCAA B standard times at the Minnesota Invite, she took the top spot in the 200 free (1:44.15) and 500 free (4:38.54) before a second place finish in the 100 free (48.45).
THREE'S COMPANY TOO
Three Gophers have yet to drop a race in their respective events this year. Senior Conner McHugh remains perfect in the 100-yard breast and 200-yard breast going 8-0 in races this season. Senior Danielle Nack is a perfect 4-0 in the 100-yard fly with a season-best time of 51.79 which ranks ninth nationally. Sophomore Tevyn Waddell continues to dominate the 100-yard back with four first place finishes and holds a season-best time of 52.39.
LAST TIME OUT
It has been just over a month since Minnesota has seen competition in the pool. Both the men's and women's team took home first place at the Minnesota Invite, swimming their way past Iowa. The men secured the top spot in comeback fashion having trailed until the final day, while the women dominated from the first event.
SCOUTING THE OPPONETS
Minnesota squares off against a pair of familiar opponents in Hawai'i and Drury. Last season both the men and women took home commanding victories over both squads.
UP NEXT
The Maroon and Gold return to the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center for two home meets before championship season. Minnesota hosts Denver on Saturday, Jan. 13 in a dual meet beginning at noon. The Gophers then host Northwestern and Purdue in a B1G triple dual meet on Jan. 26-27.
