Lindsey Greenlund led the Gophers at the Bradley Classic on Friday afternoon.

PEORIA, Ill. -- The No. 21 Golden Gopher women's cross country team competed in its first of three meets this weekend as Minnesota placed 17th in the team standings at the Bradley "Pink" Classic led by Lindsey Greenlund, Abby Kargol, and Sarah Werking at Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Ill., on Friday afternoon.

Greenlund ran a career-best 21:51.2 to place 52nd overall in a field of 298 finishers, followed by Kargol in 22:06.8 for 91st place. Werking (22:14.3) and Maria Eastman (22:21.4) both ran career-best times as Minnesota's third and fourth runners in 101st and 116th, respectively, and Ally Smith founded out the Gophers' scoring finishes in 22:28.5 for 130th place. Kelli Schmidt (22:44.0) and Sophie Schmitz (22:54.2) both ran season-best 6K times for the Gophers as well.

"I thought they competed really well," head coach Sarah Hopkins said. "We talked about being a little more aggressive and working really well together, and I thought Greenlund had the best race of her season to this point and really, of that group, we had five women who had never traveled before and who had never been to a big meet like that, and I thought they really handled themselves well. It rained all day leading up to the race and we were the fifth race on the course, so it was a very muddy course by the time we got to it."

The Maroon & Gold scored 491 points to finish 17th in the 39-team field. Iowa State took home both the team and individual titles with 54 points behind Cailie Logue's individual win in 20:32.6. Team runner-up South Dakota scored 144 points followed by Illinois (149), Grand Valley State (164), and Toledo (188) rounding out the top five teams.

"That was our 13th through 19th runners," Hopkins said. "To have some of them in positions where they would have been in most teams' top five, among teams that had their 'A' teams there, was a really cool display of how deep our group is and how much depth we have even past number 12."

Action continues for Minnesota with the team's top-12 runners racing at NCAA Pre-Nationals in Madison, Wis., and the rest of the team competing at the Tori Neubauer Invitational in La Crosse, Wis., both on Saturday morning.
