No. 3 Gophers Cruise Past Huskies

Taylor Heise and Sarah Potomak each scored twice to lead Minnesota to a 6-2 win on the road in St. Cloud, Minn., Friday night.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Freshman Taylor Heise and junior Sarah Potomak each scored two goals to lead the No. 3 University of Minnesota women's hockey team to a 6-2 win over St. Cloud State on the road at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Friday night.

Minnesota (4-0-1, 2-0-1-0 WCHA) scored three first-period goals, but the Huskies cut the visitors' lead to one with two goals early in the middle frame. However, the Gophers responded with a pair of goals to extend the lead back to three after two periods at 5-2 and added a season-high sixth goal in the third period to seal the 6-2 victory.

Heise (2g-1a) led all players with three points, including scoring the game-winner. S. Potomak (2g), Nicole Schammel (1g-1a), Kelly Pannek (1g-1a), and Emily Brown (2a) each tallied multi-point games as well while Alex Gulstene made 16 saves in net for the Maroon & Gold.

"Tonight was a really good win up here in St. Cloud," head coach Brad Frost said. "Once again, all four line contributing and playing extremely well. It was nice to get the offensive output that we did."

The Gophers took a 1-0 lead just 1:19 into the game when Schammel scored her second of the season off a feed from Olivia Knowles. Heise added back-to-back goals at the 12:22 mark and the 18:51 mark, netting the eventual game-winner on the power play, to put the Maroon & Gold on top 3-1 after the opening 20 minutes of play.

"It's certainly important, anytime you're on the road, to get that first one and then to get three and jump out the way that we did was really good," Frost said. "

St. Cloud State (2-3-0, 0-1-0 WCHA) received second-period goals from Taylor Wemple and Jenniina Nylund, coming within one midway through the second period when Nylund's goal cut the Gophers' lead to 3-2; however S. Potomak and Pannek scored in the final five minutes of the period to put Minnesota up 5-2 heading into the second intermission.

"It was just about getting back to it," Frost said, of what the Gophers needed to do after allowing St. Cloud State to get on the board. "I still think we were playing pretty well. You never want to give up two to make it 3-2, but I thought our response and push back was really good. To be able to extend the lead there, and get those two right back before the end of the period, and get up by three."

S. Potomak scored her second goal of the game and third of the season on the power play in the third period to seal the 6-2 victory in game one of the series.

Minnesota outshot the Huskies, 50-18, for the game as SCSU received a 44-save effort from Emma Polusny.

The Gophers were 2-for-4 on the power play and did not take a penalty in the game, marking the 10th game in program history Minnesota has remained out of the penalty box for the entire game. The last time was the Gophers' WCHA semifinal win over Ohio State last March.

The Gophers and Huskies wrap up this weekend's WCHA series at 4:07 p.m. CT Saturday at Ridder Arena.

"They're going to come out hard tomorrow, and we're going to come out just as hard," Frost said, looking ahead to game two of the series. "To get back home and play in front of our fans, we're looking forward to that. We'll get a little rest here tonight and get back at it."

Saturday is Daddy Daughter Day at Ridder Arena. Dad and daughter duos are invited to join the Gophers for a day at the rink by purchasing the Daddy Daughter Day ticket package. All dads and daughters who purchase this ticket package will receive a Block-M t-shirt (dad) and a Gopher Women's Hockey decal sticker (daughter) for your laptop, school locker, etc. Stop by the photo booth on the concourse prior to the game and stick around for the post-game open skate, which is open to all fans. Note that skate rental will not be available, and all fans must submit a waiver before entering the ice.

Game two against St. Cloud State is also Red Wing Community Day. Red Wing community members are invited to Ridder Arena to cheer on local Gophers Nicole Schammel (Red Wing, Minn.) and Taylor Heise (Lake City, Minn.) as they take on the Huskies.
