Gophers Garner B1G Weekly Honors

Minneapolis - Three Minnesota student-athletes gained Big Ten weekly honors today after setting high marks in their first meet of the season against Wisconsin. The Big Ten recognized Gopher divers Nick Yang and Kristen Hayden as Divers of the Week as well as selecting Max McHugh as the Big Ten Men's Freshman of the Week.
Nick Yang swept the diving competition in the 1-meter and 3-meter in Madison this past Friday. Picking up where he left off a season ago, Yang posted two NCAA Diving Zone qualifying scores by finishing first in the 1-meter with a score of 356.62 and the 3-meter with a mark of 421.88. The senior currently holds Gopher records in the 1-meter and platform events. Yang previously won Big Ten Diver of the Week on Jan., 31, 2018 after competing against Northwestern and Purdue.
Kristen Hayden claimed her first Big Ten Diver of the Week honors after besting the competition in Madison last Friday. The Hilsborough, N.J., native won the 1-meter and 3-meter events with a final score of 291.45 and 308.70 respectively. Hayden's scores in those events qualified her for NCAA Diving Zones this March in Austin, Texas.
Max McHugh was selected as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for men's swimming after claiming victories in the 100 and 200 breaststroke in his home state of Wisconsin. The Sturgeon Bay native posted the sixth-fastest time in the nation in the 100 breast in 54.44, and posted a NCAA "B" qualifying time in the 200 breast, touching in 1:57.91 with the third fastest NCAA time this season. McHugh is the first Minnesota men's swimming and diving freshman to win the award since Michael Messner in Nov., of 2015.
University of Minnesota is in action for the first time this season at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. when they take the pool against Florida State University.
