MINNEAPOLIS – No team was able to gain an edge in week two as the Gopher Baseball team's Maroon and White squads split once again in games three and four of the Steak 'n' Beans World Series this past weekend.
Game 3: Maroon 7, White 4
Offense told the story this weekend, with the Maroon team taking an advantage on Friday afternoon. Ben Mezzenga made his fall debut, getting on base four times including three walks in the leadoff spot. Max Meyer drove in a pair of runs and scored twice while lifting a double on the day, and taking a pair of walks. Rookie catcher Chase Stanke drove in two runs on a pair of extra-base hits, a double and a triple. Six of the eight batters in the maroon line-up scored at least one run on the day, and each batter got on base at least once.
On the White side, Eduardo Estrada, Jr. drove in a pair of runs with a double to highlight their offensive showing. Andrew Wilhite, Riley Smith, and Jordan Kozicky each scored a run. Nolan Burchill had one shutout inning on the mound for the White team, picking up a strikeout.
Nick Lackney struck out five in 3.0 shutout innings for the Maroon team. Sam Bridges picked up a pair of strikeouts in 1.2 hitless innings on the day.
Game 4: White 8, Maroon 0
Saturday's Family Day outing was a feel-good afternoon all around but especially the White team as they evened the series at 2-2.
All nine batters reached base for White, and seven different hitters scored at least a run. Riley Swenson went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs driven in. Jacob Hitz and Estrada also added a pair of hits. Gus Radel and Andrew Wilhite also each added a double on the day. Jake Stevenson (4.0 innings, two hits) and Bubba Horton (3.0 hitless innings, three strikeouts) combined for the shutout effort.
Three errors did Maroon no favors as each of its four pitchers surrendered at least one run on the afternoon. Sam Thoresen had the team's best showing, allowing just a pair of hits in 3.1 innings of work. Jack Wassel and Easton Bertrand each had a single for Maroon, while Mezzenga drew a pair of walks.
NOTABLE
Meyer continues to lead all Gophers with a .556 batting average … Jordan Kozicky leads the White squad at .364 … Lackney and Horton lead the pitching staffs with seven strikeouts each.
The two teams will match up yet again this weekend as the series continues this Thursday and Friday afternoon. First pitch is set for just after 3:30 p.m. both days.
