STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – On a blistering, cold Sunday afternoon Minnesota soccer closed out the regular season with a 2-0 loss to the No. 21-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. The Gophers (9-8-1, 5-5-1 Big Ten) outshot the Big Ten regular season champions 5-4 in the second half, while the Nittany Lions (13-5-0, 0-2-0 Big Ten) held a 10-6 edge for the match.
Penn State struck first in the contest as Kerry Abello worked her way past the Gophers back line before finding the upper 90 in the 13th minute.
Attacking into the wind Minnesota took the 1-0 deficient into the break while recording one shot that was off the head of Molly Fiedler.
Minnesota worked in their defensive third most of the second half as PSU continued to test the Gopher defense. Once again it was Abello who broke through the back line scoring her second of the game to give the Nittany Lions a two goal lead.
The Gophers advanced their way up to the attacking third where they took four shots in the final 15 minutes but were not successful in finding the back of the net.
April Bockin was the leading shot taker for Minnesota with two while Maddie Nielsen collected one save between the posts.
Up next for Minnesota is the Big Ten Tournament where the Gophers will play their quarterfinal match up on Sunday, Oct. 28 at a place and date yet to be determined. The official announcement of campus sites, seeding and start times will be announced  by the Big Ten following the conclusion of the match between Nebraska and Michigan State on Wednesday, Oct. 24.
