No. 21 Gophers Place Sixth at Big Tens
10/28/2018 12:01:00 PM | Women's Cross Country
Bethany Hasz (fifth) and Megan Hasz (12th) led the Golden Gophers at the 2018 Big Ten Cross Country Championship on Sunday.
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Bethany Hasz placed fifth and Megan Hasz took 12th to lead the No. 21 Golden Gopher women's cross country team with All-Big Ten performances at the 2018 Big Ten Cross Country Championship on Sunday. In the team race, Minnesota scored 167 points for a sixth-place finish.
B. Hasz posted a career-best 6K time of 20:14.1 at Nebraska's Mahoney Golf Course. Her fifth-place finish was the highest B1G finish of her career after she placed 10th a year ago and was 20th as a freshman in 2016. Earning an All-Big Ten First Team nod for the first time in her collegiate cross country career, B. Hasz also moved into fourth on Minnesota's all-time 6K performers list with her PR. Meanwhile, M. Hasz clocked a season-best time of 20:30.5 to finish 12th overall and earn her third All-Big Ten cross country award of her career with a place on this year's second team.
"I thought, overarchingly, we put ourselves in the right positions early and it kind of shook out the way we thought it was going to," head coach Sarah Hopkins said. "It was a 'B' kind of day for everybody. I don't think anybody felt amazing, which in some ways is kind of on purpose with the training we've been doing and trying to make sure we're ready to go in the next three weeks as well."
Patty O'Brien finished 48th overall and 45th in the team race, marking the best B1G finish of her career with a time of 21:31.5. Abby Kohut-Jackson was Minnesota's fourth runner in a season-best 21:39.9 for 54th overall followed by Molly Eastman in 21:49.1 for 59th place overall.
Anastasia Korzenowski placed 62nd overall with a time of 21:55.0 in her B1G debut, coming in as the sixth Gopher, while Jaycie Thomsen (22:06.8) and Olivia Hummel (22:11.9) also made their Big Ten debuts in 71st place and 75th place, respectively.
"We had some good things happen today for sure," Hopkins said. "Bethany and Megan were right in the world they need to be in. They were right up in that lead pack, and that lead pack has a lot of really talented women in it. They were in a good spot. Patty did a great job of sticking her nose in there, and Abby KJ had the best race of her season today. Anastasia and Jaycie, as freshmen, really took a shot at it, so there are really some good pieces. We just have to put them all together on the same day."
No. 7 Michigan scored 57 points to take home the team title, followed by No. 14 Michigan State as B1G runner-up with 75 points. No. 11 Wisconsin (89), No. 13 Penn State (103), and No. 10 Indiana (110) rounded out the top five teams. Wisconsin's Alicia Monson won the individual crown in 19:49.3.
"It doesn't sound great on paper, but at the same time if you look at the teams that beat us, they are legitimately probably top-10, top-15 teams in the country. Nothing to hang our heads about, but at the same time you want to out-perform a little bit. Like I told the team, we still have a lot of season left so we have to keep grinding. It was a solid day, and we have to keep the taper going and keep getting better over the next three weeks."
Before beginning the NCAA postseason at the NCAA Midwest Regional (Nov. 9), Minnesota wraps up the regular season by hosting Rocky's Run at Les Bolstad Course next Sunday, Nov. 4. The open 6K race begins at 10:30 a.m. CT. The race is open to the public with a registration fee of $10 and online registration is available now.
Rocky's Run was founded in 1981 to honor former Gopher runner Rochelle "Rocky" Racette, who died in a car accident that fall at the age of 22. While at the University of Minnesota, Racette was an All-American in track & field and cross country and champion of the Big Ten and Drake Relays 5,000-meter titles. The annual race is staged by the many members of the running community who knew and loved her. Racette's legacy lives on through the memory of those who knew her, and through Rocky's Run and the scholarship for which it raises money.
