Minnesota hosted the 38th annual Rocky's Run at Les Bolstad Course on Sunday morning.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's cross country team hosted the 38th annual running of Rocky's Run at Les Bolstad Course on Sunday morning. The race was open to the public and saw 91 finishers complete the 6K course in a mix of rain and snow with the temperature hovering around 35 degrees Fahrenheit.
Tate Sweeney finished as the female champion in fifth place overall in 22:59.4, followed by runner-up Sarah Werking in 23:01.3 and Libby Halmaier in third in 23:23.0. Carissa Dock (23:30.8) and Ally Smith (23:48.8) rounded out the top five, and the Gophers had nine of the top 10 female finishers.
"I was proud of them," head coach Sarah Hopkins said. "The fact that they got out here and were still positive and energetic and battled hard and battled well was really good. You just never know. I've told all of them that next year at this time, they could be getting ready for the regional meet and the regional meet could very easily look like this. You have to be ready for anything. In cross country, times can go out the window and you just battle and race the people around you. Overall, I thought they did a really nice job of that.
"This is, for better or worse, what you get in cross country season, rain, sleet, snow -- I think we got all of it in one 25-minute race today, so that's always fun," Hopkins said. "I thought Tate and Sarah Werking up at the front ran awesome. Libby did a great job as a redshirt kid and still hanging on this late in the season running really well. Really, across the board, we had a good day. The times and results are going to be what they are, but it's just a matter of learning how to battle and fight through things you can't control, and that was a good lesson today."
Drew Lannoye, Eric Johnson, Jon Olsen, and Daniel Strike were the top-four overall finishers.
Rocky's Run was founded in 1981 to honor former Gopher runner Rochelle "Rocky" Racette, who died in a car accident that fall at the age of 22. While at the University of Minnesota, Racette was an All-American in track & field and cross country and champion of the Big Ten and Drake Relays 5,000-meter titles. The annual race is staged by the many members of the running community who knew and loved her. Racette's legacy lives on through the memory of those who knew her, and through Rocky's Run and the scholarship for which it raises money.
Championship season continues for the No. 23 Gophers when the team travels to Peoria, Ill., for the NCAA Midwest Regional hosted by Bradley on Friday, Nov. 9.
