No. 3 Minnesota fell 4-1 in game two of this weekend's road series at top-ranked Wisconsin.
MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey team settled for a series split in this weekend's road series at top-ranked Wisconsin, falling 4-1 in game two of the Border Battle at LaBahn Arena on Sunday. Minnesota received 25 saves from junior Sydney Scobee and freshman Emily Oden scored the Gophers' lone goal after the Maroon & Gold took the series-opener by a score of 1-0.
Minnesota (7-2-1, 5-2-1-0 WCHA) surrendered the first goal of the game but countered less than two minutes later when Oden scored her third goal of the season, and the teams took a 1-1 tie into the first intermission.
Through two periods, the Gophers were outshot 24-13 and trailed 2-1, but the Maroon & Gold ended up with a 31-29 advantage in shots on goal for the game after outshooting the Badgers 18-5 in the final 20 minutes. However, UW scored twice in the final six minutes, including an empty-net goal, for the 4-1 win.
"It was another good hockey game between two good teams," head coach Brad Frost said. "Obviously on the short end of this one, we started a little slow but were able to tie it up at the end of the first. We had a chance going into the third and had a couple power plays but couldn't find a way to get one in there. I'm proud of the way our team played there in the third in particular and gave ourselves a chance to tie it up, but it wasn't meant to be. We're looking forward to getting home and playing Bemidji next weekend."
UW's Sophie Shirley put Wisconsin (9-1-0, 3-1-0-0 WCHA) on the board at the 15:43 mark of the opening frame before Oden buried a feed from Kelly Pannek down low just 1:52 later. Emily Brown, who scored the game-winner in game one, picked up the second assist on the play.
The second period saw Wisconsin regain the one-goal lead when Natalie Buchbinder fired a shot through traffic that found its way past Scobee at the 13:38 mark. The Gophers were outshot in the middle frame 14-5 but Scobee kept it a one-goal game.
Minnesota got back-to-back power plays midway through the third period but could not convert. Wisconsin's Britta Curl then increased the lead to two at 3-1 with a one-timer with 5:16 remaining before Annie Pankowski netted an empty-net goal with 32 seconds remaining. The Badgers also received a 30-save effort from goaltender Kristen Campbell.
For the series, the Gophers improved on special teams after a slow start to the season on both the power play and penalty kill. Minnesota held Wisconsin scoreless on two opportunities with the skater advantage in game two and was perfect at five-for-five on the penalty kill for the series. The Gophers were scoreless on two power plays in game two after going one-for-two in game one.
Next weekend, the Gophers return to action at Ridder Arena by hosting Bemidji State (0-7-1, 0-3-1-0 WCHA) on Friday, Nov. 2 and Saturday, Nov. 3. Puck drop is set for 6:07 p.m. CT Friday and 4:07 p.m. CT Saturday.
Minnesota is set to celebrate High School Weekend, Maple Grove Community Weekend, and Brooklyn Park Community Weekend along with holding Social Media Night on Friday and Hockey Mom Day on Saturday. Watch for exclusive ticket discounts and giveaways on social media during Friday's game, and hockey moms in attendance will receive a free Hockey Moms thermos on Saturday.
