No. 2 Gophers Rally for 6-3 Win

Minnesota scored four unanswered goals to secure a 6-3 win over visiting Bemidji State on Friday night.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 2 Golden Gopher women's hockey team rallied for a 6-3 win over visiting Bemidji State behind a pair of goals from Alex Woken and tallies by Emily Oden, Grace Zumwinkle, Katie Robinson, and Taylor Wente at Ridder Arena Friday night.
Minnesota (8-2-1, 6-2-1-0 WCHA) came from behind twice in the WCHA win, rallying to tie the game at 2-2 after falling behind early and again tying the game at 3-3 before Woken scored the eventual game-winner midway through the second period and the Maroon & Gold added three more goals in the third period. Woken (2g), Zumwinkle (1g-1a), Oden (1g-1a), Nicole Schammel (2a), and Olivia Knowles (2a) led the Gophers with multiple points and Alex Gulstene made 19 saves in net.
Bemidji State (0-8-1, 0-4-1-0 WCHA) was led by goaltender Lauren Bench, who made 31 saves as Minnesota outshot the visitors, 37-22, for the game. Clair DeGeorge scored twice for the Beavers, including two go-ahead goals as her tallies made it 1-0 and 3-2 in favor of BSU, and Paige Beebe recorded two assists.
"It was not the best start in the world, getting down 2-0, but we battled back to make it 2-2 there," head coach Brad Frost said. "Unfortunately we got down 3-2 in the first, but I'm really proud of our competitiveness, our effort, and our battle back in the second and third period in particular. It was something to learn from -- it's early in the season. We have to start better. We have to be ready to go. Credit to Bemidji, they were on top of their skates and putting things on net; they were going in early. But, we were able to stop the bleeding and get out of there with a nice win."
The Beavers took a 2-0 lead in the game's opening seven minutes as DeGeorge put the visitors on the board at the 5:31 mark before Emily Bergland doubled the Beaver lead exactly one minute later with a power-play goal.
The Gophers answered with a pair of goals of their own as Oden netted a power-play goal to open the scoring for the Maroon & Gold at the 15:38 mark of the first period before Zumwinkle tied the game at 2-2 with 3:06 remaining in the opening frame. However, BSU regained the lead less than two minutes later when DeGeorge tallied her second of the game with a power-play goal at the 18:16 mark, and the teams headed into the first intermission with the Gophers trailing by one.
Minnesota scored back-to-back goals midway through the second period when Robinson scored her first goal of the year to tie the game at 3-3 at the 9:53 mark of the second period before Woken scored off a feed from Williamson and Knowles less than two minutes later at the 11:48 mark to give the Maroon & Gold its first lead of the game.
The third period saw Woken score her second of the game and fourth of the season with 9:58 remaining to give the Gophers the two-goal lead before Wente got on the board with her third goal of the year with 4:23 remaining.
Both teams scored one power-play goal as the Gophers were one-for-three while holding the Beavers to one-for-two with the skater advantage.
The teams wrap up this weekend's WCHA series at 4:07 p.m. CT Saturday at Ridder Arena. Saturday is Hockey Mom Day as hockey moms in attendance will receive a free Hockey Moms thermos, and High School Weekend, Maple Grove Community Weekend, and Brooklyn Park Community Weekend continue on Saturday as well.
