10/30/2018 1:58:00 PM | Men's Gymnastics

The start of a new season marks the start of a new freshmen spotlight series. We begin our series with Tyler Davis, a native of Kansas City, Mo. Davis competed with Fuzion Gymnastics and attended Liberty High School. In 2017 he was a national qualifier. Davis was also the state Vault Champion and the Region 3 High Bar and Vault Champion in 2018.

Gopher Sports: How has your time on campus and the team been so far?

Tyler Davis: My time on campus has been amazing. I feel so at home and am very lucky to be a part of such a supportive and loving team. The culture has been trademark for this team and I am fortunate to get to be a part of it all.

GS: What are you most looking forward to in your first school year and season?

TD: I am looking forward to all the new and exciting things that I get to experience. With school there is a lot more freedom and I have the ability to take classes over things that I am really interested in. I am really excited to get to compete for not only my team but for my university. It is an honor to be able to do what I love at such an amazing school. I can't wait for traveling to meets with the team and just how exciting this season will be. A lot will be learned and I am ready for the journey.

GS: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?

TD: I chose the University of Minnesota for the coaching staff and atmosphere of the team. I felt really at home even though I am six hours away from Kansas City. The university is a beautiful place and there are so many opportunities here.

GS: How did you get into gymnastics?

TD: I got into gymnastics when I was flipping on my couch at home when I was really little. My parents threw me into a gymnastics class and I stuck with it ever since.

GS: What is your favorite gymnastics memory?

TD: My favorite gymnastics memory was getting to compete at JO Nationals for the first time.  After getting injured that season, it was really fulfilling that I was able to qualify for nationals and enjoy that experience. It showed my hard work to come back successful and I took a lot of pride in that.

GS: What are your hobbies outside of gymnastics?

TD: Outside of gymnastics I like to play soccer and volleyball for fun. I am really interested in biology, specifically the medical field, so I like to do occasional research on that.

GS: What is one thing Gopher fans should know about you?

TD: One thing gopher fans should know about me is that I don't like to wear hats because it messes up my hair. Also, meets are going to be really exciting this year, so make sure you pack the Pav!
