Fresh Faces Lead Gophers Out onto the Mississippi

10/4/2018 9:37:00 AM | Rowing

MINNEAPOLIS – The Gopher Rowing team opens up its 2018-19 campaign in its lone home-site competition of the season at the 39th Annual Head of the Mississippi Regatta, hosted by the Minneapolis Rowing Club.

Last year's event was canceled due to fast-moving currents. So, it will be the first chance for Minnesota to compete at the prestigious meet since 2016.

"We already had to come off the water at this time last year which was highly unusual," said head coach Wendy Davis. "When the current is down [like this season], we make progress much more rapidly. We'll find out how far this team can go. We are progressing faster than we have in a long time. This is the perfect group to do it with because they're motivated and ready.

The event also represents the first action for the novice teams under new coach Jeff Forrester and the new crop of varsity athletes who "graduated" from the novice team after their first year.

"We were fortunate with five recruited athletes coming in to get three additional girls who had experience," said Forrester. "They help make up a quality group that has advanced faster than anticipated. Usually, you don't have them rowing with all eight in a boat [this early], but we did it last week, and it was awesome to see."

The novice race is second on the docket for Minnesota, with two teams of Gophers dueling at 9:45 a.m. The addition of Forrester to the coaching staff has benefitted the team as well.

"Jeff is just fun. He's quiet, but he's has a great sense of humor," said head coach Wendy Davis, who saw turnover across her staff this offseason. "Because he's been coaching at the collegiate level for many years, this isn't new to him. He's hit the ground running."

In addition to Forrester, Davis promoted Terri Lindenbaum from a volunteer position to a full-time assistant, allowed third-year assistant Chrissy Holm to take over the varsity fours, and brought on boathouse manager and rigger, Martha Brummitt to the staff.

"I love the previous coaching staff, and I was sorry to see that change," said Davis. "But I'm excited for the change that did come. Chrissy was ready to move in to lead the Varsity 4s. Terri brings a lot of energy to the group. Martha is fun. She's very creative and smart, and we enjoy working with her a great deal."

Four teams will compete in the first collegiate race of the day for Minnesota as the starting gun for the Collegiate 4 goes off at 9:30 a.m. The Gophers will also launch three teams in the Open 2 at 10:30 a.m. and the Collegiate 8 at 12:15 p.m.

Taking full advantage of summer development camp, Minnesota is off to a great start in fall practice, led by captains Sara Nelson and Abby Rieser.

"I always say, I love seniors [because] they understand what the culture is," said Davis. "They are willing to buy in and also help others. As the team captains, Abby and Sara have fit that perfectly."

In addition to the seniors, Davis has been impressed with the sophomores enjoying their first varsity action. While the team is competing amongst themselves at the Head of the Mississippi, they will still be looking to show how much they have grown from last season.

"This was the biggest group that we have ever had do summer rowing after their novice year, and the impact is tremendous," said Davis. "We are moving better than we ever moved at this time of year. In particular, both Whitney Holm and Lindsay Eliasen are stepping up as sophomores dating back to development camp. They were strong to begin with, but as their technique is improving, we are reaping the benefit."

The team will get just this one shot to compete in Minneapolis this season, and Davis believes her athletes are taking full advantage. The coaching staff also takes time to appreciate seeing how their team reacts to the first big moment of the season.

"It's always so much fun watching the novices compete for the University of Minnesota for the first time," said Davis.

Race Course
The race begins at the Minneapolis Rowing Club near the Lake Street/Marshall Bridge and travels north past the University of Minnesota boathouse before ending just past the Washington Ave bridge. A detailed map is available via the link above.
