Gophers Fall in Back-and-Forth Match with Indiana, 3-2

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – On a warm Sunday afternoon Minnesota soccer faced their first true set back on the road falling to Indiana, 3-2. Two late second half goals by the Hoosiers (7-5-2, 3-4-0 Big Ten) sealed the victory over the Gophers (8-6-1, 4-3-1) despite Minnesota winning the shot battle 9-8.
In a back-and-forth match tied at one apiece, the Gophers set up for their fifth corner of the day in the 75th minute. McKenna Buisman placed the ball to the middle of the box where Nikki Albrecht headed it towards Patricia Ward who then headed it past the Indiana goal keeper for the go-ahead goal.
The Hoosiers responded back nine minutes later with the game tying goal in the 84th minute. Taking advantage of the momentum gained, Indiana came right back at the Gophers defense as MyKayla Brown slotted it past keeper Maddie Nielsen for the game winner.
Indiana attempted to deflate the Gophers early scoring in the 5th minute following a corner kick. Minnesota held strong on the pitch as April Bockin found the equalizer in the 31st minute.
With the Hoosiers turning the ball over in the middle third, Bockin did it all by herself dribbling past two Indiana defenders to inside the box. She scored her sixth goal of the season and second in as many games. This was the second time in her career that she has scored in back-to-back games with the last time being September 23, 2016 at Indiana and September 25, 2016 at Purdue.
In what was an aggressively played match, Minnesota committed four fouls to Indiana's 13 while the Gophers saw six corner kicks to the Hoosiers five.
Up next the Gophers are back at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium against Wisconsin on Saturday, October 13. The Border Battle is set for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
