Last Second Goal Lifts Wisconsin Past Gophers, 3-2

10/13/2018 6:48:00 PM | Soccer

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota soccer fell to No 23 Wisconsin in heartbreaking fashion Saturday evening at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, 3-2. A goal by Wisconsin (11-2-3, 5-1-3 Big Ten) in the closing seconds of regulation lifted the Badgers past Minnesota (8-7-1, 4-4-1 Big Ten) despite the Gophers scoring in the early minutes of the Border Battle.  The shots rang near even as Wisconsin held the edge by one shot, 12-11, while the shots on goal held even at seven.

The Gophers stuck early in the match taking advantage of a Wisconsin turnover in the Badgers defensive third. In the fifth minute, Patricia Ward controlled from the left side where she found April Bockin making a run towards the net. Seconds later Bockin netted her seventh goal of the year to give the Gophers an early lead.

Wisconsin opened up the scoring in the second half tying up the match at a goal apiece in the 54th minute. Five minutes later the Badgers came right back at the Gophers to take a lead in the 58th minute.

Minnesota did not back down without a fight finding the game tying goal eleven minutes later in the 69th minute. Another Wisconsin turnover led to Molly Fiedler playing a perfect pass to Megan Gray on the flank. Gray, after a touch, found Bockin once again making a run at the net where she scored her second goal of the game and most importantly the equalizer.

Fiedler's assist moves her into a tie with Bock and Laurie Seidl for seventh all-time with 24 career assists.

Down to the final 90 seconds, Bockin took a shot which forced the Badger goalkeeper to make a diving save. Working quickly the Gophers corner kick was cleared out by Wisconsin towards the middle third.

Badger forward Lauren Rice took it the rest of the way to make the game-winning goal on a rocket shot putting it past Maddie Nielsen from 24 yards out.

The Gophers enter the final week of the regular season as they host Iowa on Thursday, Oct. 18 before traveling to Penn State on Sunday, Oct. 21 to close out the regular season. The match against Iowa is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will air on Big Ten Network.
