Gophers clinch a berth to the Big Ten Tournament.
MINNEAPOLIS – Senior forward April Bockin stole the show as she helped the Gophers clinch a berth to the Big Ten Tournament by scoring two goals while adding an assist. In front of an electric Elizabeth Lyle Robbie crowd Minnesota (9-7-1, 5-4-1 Big Ten) defeated Iowa (8-7-2, 4-5-1 Big Ten) 3-1 to close out the home portion of the Gophers regular season schedule.
"We are really happy for the team and we feel like they deserve to be in the Big Ten Tournament," said Head Coach Stefanie Golan.
Bockin's offensive night was just getting start as her corner kick in the 14th minute landed right in front of the net where Molly Fiedler tapped it in. With the assist Bockin moves into a tie for fifth all-time with Corinne Bolder and Erin Hussey with 25 career assists while in the Maroon and Gold.
The scoring continued as Bockin found herself involved in the next scoring opportunity. Nikki Albrecht sent a well-played ball to the top of the box from just inside midfield where Bockin showed off her athletic speed to get to it first. Beating an Iowa defender was step one before Bockin cleared the Iowa goalkeeper to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
The Gophers surrendered a goal to Iowa just before the break but defense held strong from that point on.
With Maddie Nielsen between the posts and Albrecht, Emily Peterson, Athena Kuehn and Marisa Windingstad in front of her, the Gophers held strong during the full 90 minutes. They allowed no corner kicks and just five shots on goal. Nielsen in net collected four saves.
To put the icing on the cake it was the duo of Bockin and Albrecht once again to push the lead back to two. Another long pass from the Minnesota defensive third from Albrecht set up Bockin to do her thing while being 1-on-1 with an Iowa defender. The goal gave Bockin her third multi-goal game of the season and fifth of her career.
Minnesota closes out the regular season by traveling to Penn on Sunday, Oct. 21 at noon C.T.
