Gophers head to Ohio State for a contest with the No. 3 Buckeyes
FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
1. The Gophers take to the road this week for the second time this season when they visit No. 3 Ohio State. Minnesota is 7-44 all-time against Ohio State and the Buckeyes have won the last 10 meetings. The Gophers most recent win in the series was a 29-17 victory on the road on Oct. 14, 2000. That game, which was 18 years ago this weekend, featured a quick start by the Gophers as they jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the first quarter. Travis Cole passed for 243 yards and two scores, while Ron Johnson caught eight balls for 163 yards and one score. Tellis Redmon scored once and churned out 118 yards on 30 carries, and kicker Dan Nystrom connected on field goals from 23, 32 and 42 yards.
2. Minnesota has combined for 2,689 passing, rushing and receiving yards and 1,949 - or 72 percent - have been produced by freshmen. The Gophers have passed for 982 yards and 959 (97%) have come from the arm of a freshman. They have rushed for 725 yards and 471 (65%) are from freshmen. Minnesota has 982 receiving yards and 517 (52%) are the result of a freshman catching the ball.
3. Minnesota was whistled for just two penalties against Iowa. That has been a staple of Coach Fleck's teams and this season is no different. The Gophers rank No. 6 in the country with only 20 penalties this season. They rank No. 11 in the NCAA with just 199 penalty yards. The Gophers were called for nine penalties against New Mexico State, but have since been penalized only 11 times in the last four games. Nobody has been more impressive in that area than Thomas Barber. He does not have a single defensive penalty in his entire career despite seeing almost every single defensive snap as the "Mike" linebacker the past two seasons. According to Pro Football Focus, he has played 1,014 defensive snaps (24 in 2016, 747 in 2017 and 243 in 2018) in college. The only penalty of his career came on a special teams play when he was called for holding against Northwestern as a freshman in 2016.
4. Emmit Carpenter has made 83 percent of his career field goals (44-of-53), which ranks second all-time in Big Ten history. Northwestern's Jeff Budzien, who played from 2010-13, is first at 87.3 percent. Budzien made 48-of-55 career field goals. Ohio State's Mike Nugent, who played from 2001-04, is third at 81.8 percent. Nugent made 72-of-88 field goals.
5. Tyler Johnson is a star. The Minneapolis native exploded onto the scene last year with 35 catches for 677 yards and seven touchdowns. Through five games this season, he has hauled in 28 (fifth in B1G) balls for 402 yards (tied for fourth in B1G) and six scores (second in B1G). Johnson has 77 career catches for 1,220 yards (19th in school history) and 14 touchdowns (tied for ninth all-time). His six career 100-yard games are tied for fourth in school history. He has three 100-yard receiving games this year and the last Gopher to have four 100-yard games in a season was Eric Decker in 2009.
