MINNEAPOLIS – After 36 holes of play Monday, Minnesota wrapped up day one of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at Old Overton Golf Club in Vestavia Hills, Ala., with top-10 team and player finishes.
As a team, they carded a 286 in the first round and a 284 in the second for a total 570, 10-over par to stand alone in seventh place of 12 teams. BYU leads the team standings at seven-under, while Arkansas' Julian Perico is atop the individual leaderboard at 11-under.
Sophomore Angus Flanagan had a terrific comeback after a tough first round. He was shooting five-over in his opening 18 at one point and wrapped up with a three-over 73. He battled back in the second round and shot five birdies on the front nine to trade his three-over for a three-under 67 mark to sit at even-par for the tournament. The round of 67 was his second-best score this season and in his career. Flanagan closed out Monday with a 140 and in a tie for eighth place, an 18-spot surge from the first round.
Senior Peter Jones was Minnesota's first round star in his debut team appearance of the season. He carded six birdies in his first 18 to finish with a four-under 66 for the opening round. The 66 was a career best round for Jones and matches Minnesota's second-best round of the season to date. He faltered a bit in the second round and added 10 strokes by No. 17. A birdie to end the day put him at 79, nine-over par. He currently has a five-over total of 145 and is tied for 25th.
Junior Noah Rasinski finished his first round with a two-over 72 and had a consistent start to his second round, shooting even in all but two holes through 15. He dropped three more strokes on Nos. 16 and 17, but gained one back with a birdie on his last hole of the day. He is now shooting 146, six-over par, and is tied for 34th.
Like Flanagan, freshman Lincoln Johnson saw a six-stroke improvement from the first round to the second. He tallied three birdies in his first nine holes of round one, but by round's end finished with a 76. He countered a double bogey with two birdies through the first 11 holes of the second round and traded pairs of birdies and bogeys on Nos. 14-18 to break even with a 70. He sits with Rasinski in a tie for 34th at six-over.
Junior Thomas Longbella recorded three birdies in eight holes during the first round, but shot over par in five of the next seven to finish at 75. He had a better second round and, despite shooting over par in five of his first eight holes, he settled in with two birdies on the back for a three-over 73. He has a two-round score of 148, eight-over par, and is tied for 44th.
Minnesota wraps up action in Alabama Tuesday with Longbella starting the Gophers off at 8:50 a.m. Live stats will be available on Golfstat.com.
