MINNEAPOLIS – Sophomore Angus Flanagan posted the best finish of the season by a Minnesota golfer as he tied for sixth after the final round of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Vestavia Hills, Ala., Tuesday.

Starting on the back nine of Old Overton Golf Club, Flanagan birdied the 15th and 16th holes to move to two-under par. He then canceled out one of his two bogeys on the front nine with a birdie on No. 5 to shoot a one-under 69 in the final round. Sitting in eighth place after 36 holes Monday, Tuesday's round brought his tournament total to a one-under 209 to put him in a five-way tie for sixth. It was his second best career finish, bested only by a fifth-place effort at last year's Maui Jim Intercollegiate.

Not only was it the best finish by a Gopher this season, bettering senior Peter Jones' tie for 10th last week at the Marquette Intercollegiate, but Flanagan's score of one-under also matched Thomas Longbella at this year's Maui Jim Intercollegiate for best score to par by a Gopher this season.

As a team, Minnesota finished in seventh place with a 22-over par score of 862. Host-Alabama won the team title with a 12-under 828, while Arkansas' Julian Perico held on to his second round lead to win the individual championship with a 13-under 197.

Freshman Lincoln Johnson used a one-over 71 Tuesday to move four spots up the leaderboard to tie for 30th. He was five-over on the day through six holes, but then embarked on a seven-hole run that saw him get back to even. It began with a birdie on No. 18 and continued with a birdie-eagle-birdie stretch between the fourth and sixth holes. An additional bogey on No. 7 bumped him back to one-over for the day and a three-round total of seven-over, 217.

Three strokes behind Johnson was junior Noah Rasinski, who finished 39th with a 10-over 220. Rasinski matched his second-round total with a four-over 74 Tuesday. He was one-under on the front nine, but was done in by a five-over back nine.

Jones was unable to capture the magic of his first-round 66 and ended with an eight-over 78 in the third round. He tied for 44th and was 13-over par at 223.

Longbella's final round 81 left him 19 strokes over par for the tournament, good for a 229 and 51st place finish.

Minnesota now has just one tournament left in the fall portion of its schedule. After a one-week hiatus, the Golden Gophers are back in action Oct. 22-23 at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas Texas.
