Minnesota Sweeps Purdue in Final Regular Season Home Game

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball team swept No. 12 Purdue (25-10, 25-23, 25-19) to close out the regular home season. With the win, the Gophers improve to 22-2 overall and 16-0 in the Big Ten. Purdue falls to 21-6 and 10-6 in the conference. With the win, the Gophers now hold their longest Big Ten win streak at 16-straight.Â
The Gophers were led by Stephanie Samedy who put up a team-best 10 kills. Adanna Rollins and Alexis Hart each chipped in nine, while Regan Pittman followed with eight and a season-high, .615. That mark was also a team best and she also contributed four blocks. Samantha Seliger-Swenson put up 27 assists and nine digs. CC McGraw recorded 12 digs, while and Lauren Barnes had 10. For the fourth time this season, and in her career, Barnes served up three aces. Minnesota outhit Purdue, .344 to .167. As a team, the Maroon and Gold had 40 kills, 52 digs and four blocks. Purdue put up 38 kills, 46 digs and one block.
Following the match, the Gophers honored head coach Hugh McCutcheon as he was inducted into the International Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held today in Holyoke, Mass., as McCutcheon was in Minnesota leading the Gophers. Coaching the 2008 USA men's team to an Olympic gold and the 2012 USA women's team to Olympic silver, McCutcheon becomes the first New Zealander to be inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame.Â
The Gophers hit the road to close out the rest of the regular season. Minnesota takes on Maryland on Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. The match will be streamed on Big Ten Network Plus.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The Gophers hit .379 and held a 90 sideout percent to win, 25-10. Minnesota opened the set with a 6-1 run off McGraw's serve rotation, which included two aces. Samedy later earned a kill for an 11-5 lead. Purdue called its first timeout after a Boilermaker attack error and a 12-5 Gopher lead. Pittman added a kill for the 16-7 point. Purdue took its second timeout of the set as the Gophers lead, 17-7. A Rollins kill gave the Gophers their 20th point of the set (20-9), while Hart put the Gophers up, 22-10. Purdue committed three-straight errors as the Gophers went up, 1-0.
Set 2: Minnesota fought off a Purdue comeback to win the set, 25-23. The Gophers got a block from Pittman/Rollins for a 7-4 lead, but the Boilermakers tied the set at 11-11 off an ace. Purdue called a timeout as the Gophers went up, 13-12. Samedy put the Gophers up 15-13 on a kill, while Rollins added a kill at 18-14, Purdue called a timeout as the Gophers led, 19-14. Pittman had a kill for the 22-17 point, while a Boilermaker hitting error pushed it to set point. As Purdue cut the lead to two at 24-22, Minnesota called a timeout. As Purdue had an ace and cut it to 24-23, Minnesota used its second timeout. The Gophers were able to close out the set off a Samedy kill, and take a 2-0 lead.
Set 3: The Gophers hit .382 in the third to win, 25-19. Minnesota went up, 6-4 off a Pittman kill, while a Barnes added put Minnesota up, 10-7. After a Samedy kill at 15-10, Purdue called a timeout. A Seliger-Swenson ace put the Gophers up, 18-12 as Purdue called its second timeout. Purdue responded out of the break and went on a 5-0 run as Minnesota called a timeout. The Gophers, regrouped after the timeout and went on a 7-2 run for the sweep. Minnesota closed out the set with two kills from Rollins and one each from Samedy and Pittman.
