Gophers Begin Three-Day Hawkeye Invite in Iowa City

The Gopher Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams will remain in the Midwest this week as they travel south of the border to Big Ten rival Iowa for the Hawkeye Invitational this Thursday through Saturday in Iowa City.

Max McHugh continued the dominating start to his rookie campaign by bringing home Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors for the third time this season earlier this week following a record-setting performance at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge last weekend in West Lafayette, Indiana. McHugh opened the weekend by setting the fastest time in the nation this year with a 1:54.20 mark in the 200-yard breaststroke. He previously claimed the weekly rookie nod on Oct. 17 and 24 earlier this season. Five different athletes have taken home men's or women's weekly honors for the Maroon & Gold already this season.

Mackenzie Padington helped lead the Big Ten women to a 251-102 victory with a win in the 1000-free on Saturday morning, setting the nation's best time at 9:34.06. Tevyn Waddell posted a top-five national performance in the 100-back, finishing in 0:52.48. In the diving well, Kristen Hayden finished fifth with a score of 302.40. In the men's 179-174 edging of the ACC, Bowen Becker posted the nation's best time in the 50-free at 0:19.62. Nick Yang finished sixth among divers, posting a 344.6.

In addition to the Gophers and their hosts from Iowa, the field includes Missouri State, South Dakota State, Grand Canyon, South Dakota, MU, Purdue, Nebraska, Omaha, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Northern Iowa, Kansas, and Iowa State.
