Gophers Win Seven Titles at SDSU

Minnesota got an early start to the 2019 indoor track & field season at the SDSU Holiday Open on Friday.

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The Golden Gophers won seven event titles as the University of Minnesota women's track & field team got an early start to the 2019 indoor campaign by kicking off the season at the SDSU Holiday Open at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, S.D., Friday night.

"I told them yesterday before we left that there's no place I'd rather be than right here with them right now," director of track & field and cross country Matt Bingle said. "I told them that we get to do something that no one has ever done before at this university. It was great to have both teams together as one team. It was fun. It was just a great experience for us. There was a ton of energy. That way, it was really good and we're really happy with that."

The Gophers took home three individual event titles on the track and four in the field events. Four attached Gophers won events while three Gophers won their respective events while competing unattached.

"The goal of the meet was really just to shake off the rust and learn how to do all of the controllable things again, from warming up and cooling down, to the emotions and how to communicate and go through a meet," Bingle said. "That was the big goal of today -- and obviously to come out of here healthy. We accomplished those goals, and a lot of kids had some PRs or were close to it, so that was good because we really haven't done a lot to get to that point yet."

Amira Young made her collegiate debut by winning the 200m in 24.70 seconds, just shy of making the Gophers' all-time top-10 list, and Kelli Schmidt ran a career-best time of 2:11.64 to win the 800m, followed by Val Larson as runner-up in 2:12.89 and Paige Peschel in third in an indoor career-best 2:12.97.

Lorean Murray improved on her indoor career-best mark in triple jump, posting a winning mark of 12.06m (39-07.00). She also finished fourth in long jump.

Ashley Ramacher won the pentathlon with 3,456 points, winning the pentathlon high jump and placing fourth in both the 60m hurdles and 800m. In her official Gopher debut, Allison Gerads scored 3,388 points to place third in the pentathlon; her highest finish was a second-place showing in pentathlon shot put and a third-place finish in long jump.

Three Gophers won events while competing unattached. Kayla Vogt won the 600m in her first collegiate competition, and unattached Gophers swept the throws as Nayoka Clunis won shot put (16.17m, 53-00.75) and Kaitlyn Long won weight throw (24.11m, 79-01.25). Clunis finished as runner-up in the weight throw as well, posting a career-best mark of 21.67m (71-01.25) while competing unattached.

"Everybody had great attitudes and gave great efforts," Bingle said. "It was just good to get back on the track with everybody again."

Other top performances by the Gophers included Hannah Morris making her collegiate debut with a third-place finish in long jump and Rachel Schow placing third in the 60m hurdles. The Gophers' 4x400m relay team of Sophia Anderson, Schow, Young, and Allison Dugan finished second as well.

Minnesota wraps up the 2018 portion of the season with its annual Intrasquad meet on Friday, Dec. 7. The Gophers then kick off competition in 2019 by splitting the squad at the University of Nebraska Graduate Classic on Friday, Jan. 11 and Saturday, Jan. 12 and the Minnesota Open on Saturday, Jan. 12.
