LINCOLN, Neb. -- Rachel Schow, Meleah Biermaier, and Amira Young led the way as the Golden Gopher women's track & field team took home six event titles to wrap up competition on day two of the Graduate Classic hosted by Nebraska on Saturday afternoon.
The Minnesota women finished the meet with eight event crowns after Kelli Schmidt (800m) and Lindsey Greenlund (mile) won their respective events on day one of the meet on Friday. Day two saw the Gophers win five more events on the track along with a win in the shot put. The Gopher men took home five men's titles at the meet to bring Minnesota's overall total to 13 event champions at the Graduate Classic.
"It was a good overall team day, a nice first meet of the year, and a good first step for us," director of track & field and cross country Matt Bingle said. "Obviously we have a lot of work to do, but I'm happy for the most part with where we're at. It's a process of building throughout the season; every week counts. We just have to get back to work on Monday, keep doing the right things on and off the track, and keep supporting each other and being great teammates."
Young won both the 60m dash and the 200m to lead the Gophers on Saturday. She clocked a career-best time of 7.44 seconds in the 60m, good for fourth in program history, and posted a winning time of 24.53 seconds in the 200m to lead four Gophers among the top six.
Schow (60m hurdles) and Biermaier (600m) also won two events on day two of the meet as the duo took home top honors in their respective individual events along with joining Erin Huls and Sophia Anderson to make up Minnesota's winning 4x400m relay team. Huls (600m) and Anderson (400m) also earned individual runner-up finishes.
Leading the way in the field events, Kiley Sabin won the shot put with a season-opening mark of 16.61m (54-06.00) while Tess Keyzers finished as runner-up with a career-best throw of 15.10m (49-06.50).
Also in the field events, Lorean Murray posted a career-best jump of 12.09m (39-08.00) in triple jump to finish third at the meet and move into ninth in Gophers history.
Other top performances on day two of the meet saw Lexi Kiefer finish as pole vault runner-up, clearing a season-best 3.65m (11-11.75).
Members of the team also competed at the Minnesota Open at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse on Saturday where the Gophers won seven events, including six wins by unattached Gophers.
Molly Roach won the 800m in her official collegiate debut on the track after competing unattached last season. Meanwhile, Libby Halbmaier (mile), Ayesha Champagnie (60m hurdles and long jump), Karlie Place (pole vault), Kaitlyn Long (weight throw), and Nayoka Clunis (shot put) won their respecitve events while competing unattached.
