Gophers Wrap Up Weekend with Four Titles

1/19/2019 8:42:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

The Gopher track & field program won two shot put titles and a pair of events on the track on day two of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational.

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Golden Gopher track & field program won four titles on day two of the Larry Wieczorek Invite on Saturday. Kiley Sabin and Jonathan Tharaldsen each won premier shot put titles while Jordan MacIntosh and Bethany Hasz won titles on the track to lead the University of Minnesota on the second day of competition in Iowa City, Iowa.

"The competition was a lot more with some bigger schools, some Big Ten schools along with Baylor and Arizona, so it was good to be in that environment," director of track & field and cross country Matt Bingle said. "I think a lot of people took another step. It may not show up on paper, but I felt like people did that."

On the women's side, Sabin won the premier shot put with a season-best throw of 17.13m (56-02.50), just 0.04 meters shy of her Gophers' program record mark. She set a new Hawkeye Indoor Track facility record as well. While competing unattached, Nayoka Clunis recorded a career-best mark as well, throwing 16.63m (54-06.75).

"I was excited for Kiley to get a big mark, just off her PR, especially this early," Bingle said. "And then Jon won, too. I don't think he's ever thrown over 60 feet, so he has to be excited about that, too."

Meanwhile, Tharaldsen won the men's premier shot put competition behind a personal record of 18.36 meters (60-03) -- a mark that pushed Tharaldsen into 10th all-time on Minnesota's top performers list. Eric Rousemiller finished fourth in the event as well.

The men's unit garnered a pair of wins on the track that both set Larry Wieczorek Invitational meet records. MacIntosh set a new personal record of 4:12.56 to win the men's unseeded mile competition. Unattached runner Shane Streich also picked up a win on the track, taking home the title in the men's premier 800m race with a time of 1:51.04. The Gophers carried four top-10 finishers in the premier 800m as Dawson LaRance came in sixth, Lucas Trapp finished seventh, and Chris Trotter came in ninth.

B. Hasz won the 3,000m in her 2019 debut, clocking a season-opening time of 9:28.85 to take home top honors.

Day one action at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational saw Amira Young win the unseeded 200m to lead the Maroon & Gold and Kaitlyn Long win the weight throw while competing unattached; the attached Gophers capped off the meet with two titles on the men's side and three on the women's side. The Minnesota women were second to Baylor (91 points) in the team standings, scoring 85.50 points, while the men placed third with 72 points behind host Iowa (87 points) and Missouri (79).

The Gopher women earned six more top-five finishes on the track. Amira Young finished as runner-up in the premier 60m dash with a time of 7.46 seconds, and Paige Peschel (career-best 2:12.46) and Kelli Schmidt (2:12.89) finished third and fourth in the premier 800m race. Sophie Schmitz ran a career-best time of 2:13.38 to finish as runner-up in the unseeded section of the 800m as well.

Megan Hasz finished third in the mile, leading four Gophers with career-best times. M. Hasz finished third with a PR of 4:47.83 followed by Patty O'Brien (4:53.04) in eighth, Olivia Hummel (4:53.18) in ninth, and Anastasia Korzenowski (4:46.99) in 15th.

Unattached runner Jackson Wellenstein ran a new indoor personal record of 1:19.06 to finish fourth in the men's premier 600m where Trotter finished eighth as well.

The men's 4x400m team of Jonathan Webb, Ben Psicihulis, Zach Nelson, and Elliot Davis finished third in 3:10.51 while the women's 4x400m relay team of Sophia Anderson, Rachel Schow, Meleah Biermaier, and Erin Huls took eighth in 3:46.88. Anderson also finished as runner-up in the unseeded section of the 400m in 56.81 seconds while Schow led the Gophers in the 60m hurdles in eighth (8.61 seconds).

"We are fatigued; we've been on the road the last two weekends, and we're in our third week of training," Bingle said. "I think now we just have to get a little bit of rest and get prepared to start school this week. Some people will compete and some will rest next week with the Jack Johnson Classic, and then we'll get ready for the second half of the indoor season with the Michigan meet coming up and Iowa State after that."

The Gophers return home to the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse to host the Jack Johnson Classic next Friday, Jan. 25 and Saturday, Jan. 26.
