Gophers Capture Two Crowns in Iowa on Friday

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Minnesota track & field program kicked off competition at Iowa's Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday by picking up event titles in the women's weight throw and the women's unseeded 200 meters. 

Amira Young picked up Minnesota's first win of the weekend on the track with a victory in the unseeded section of the 200 meters. Young clocked a collegiate-best time of 24.37 seconds to move into a tie for eighth in Gophers' history with 2018 graduate Emerald Egwim

Meanwhile, Kaitlyn Long, who competed unattached on Friday, won the women's weight throw with a Hawkeye Indoor Track facility record throw of 23.30 meters (76-05.50 ft.). Tess Keyzers led the attached Gophers with a seventh-place finish at 19.77 meters. 

The Gophers also had notable performances in the men's weight throw as Kieran McKeag matched his personal record to finish second in the field. With a toss of 20.40 meters (66-11.25 ft.) on Friday, McKeag remains in eighth-place on Minnesota's all-time top performers list. Jon Nerdal added a third-place finish with a personal record of 20.35 meters (66-09.25 ft.), tying for 10th all-time at Minnesota. Kaleb Siekmeier and Connor Rousemiller finished seventh and eighth, respectively. 

Additionally, several Gophers improved their rankings on the school's all-time best lists. Hannah Morris placed fifth in long jump with a collegiate-best mark of 5.91 meters (19-04.75 ft.) to improve on her 10th-ranked mark in Minnesota history. Ashley Ramacher cleared an indoor career-best 1.75 meters for third place in high jump and moved into a tie for seventh in program history in the event. Paige Peschel led the Gophers in the unseeded section of the 600 meters with a third-place finish, clocking a career-best time of 1:33.43. 

Matt Rosen and Lucas Trapp finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men's unseeded 600 meters with Trapp clocking a personal record of 1:20.67. Mason Roomes added a fourth-place finish in the men's long jump. 

Meanwhile, the Maroon & Gold picked up a total of 12 titles at the St. Thomas Invitational on Friday night at the Anderson Athletic Recreation Center. Allison Dugan won the 200 meters, and Ally Smith and Sarah Werking finished first and second, respectively, in the women's mile while unattached runner Courtney West came in third. Collin Sieffert and Alex Kelner led the field in the men's 400 meters with Sieffert taking the title and Kelner standing as the runner-up. Clayton Johnson won the men's 600 meters while James Travis won the men's triple jump. Sieffert, Johnson, Kelner and John Uchytil combined for a win in the men's 4x400 meter relay.

The Gophers also picked up six wins from unattached competitors – Teddy Frid (men's pole vault, men's 60-meter hurdles), Karlie Place (women's pole vault), Emily Stendel (women's weight throw) and Ayesha Champagnie (women's long jump, women's 60-meter hurdles). Mike Hereauf and Uchytil finished second and third to Frid in the men's pole vault, respectively, while Lexi Keifer was second in the women's pole vault.
