True freshman receiver is honored by the Big Ten after standout performance
Rashod Bateman was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after his standout performance at Illinois. The true freshman had seven catches for 175 yards and two touchdowns.
Bateman set a career high in yards (175) and tied his career high in catches (7) and touchdowns (2). His two scores spanned 61 and 86 yards. His 86-yard touchdown - from fellow freshman Tanner Morgan - was Minnesota's sixth-longest pass play since 1971, and it was the longest for the Gophers since Asad Abdul-Khaliq's school-record 96-yard touchdown pass to Jared Ellerson at Northwestern on Oct. 4, 2003.
Bateman's 175 receiving yards were the most by a freshman since Ryan Thelwell's 178 yards versus Northwestern on Oct. 15, 1994. Bateman now has consecutive 100-yard receiving games, as he had four catches for 108 yards and one touchdown last week against Indiana.
For the season, Bateman has 42 catches for 578 yards and six touchdowns. His 42 receptions is a freshman record for the Gophers, as he broke Ron Johnson's previous mark of 38 set in 1998. Bateman needs 77 yards to break Ernie Wheelwright's 2004 freshman record of 654 yards and needs two more touchdowns to break Wheelwright's record of seven receiving touchdowns.
Bateman is the sixth Gopher (most since U had seven players recognized in 2014) to be honored by the Big Ten this year and is the third freshman to be honored with the weekly award. Tanner Morgan was named Big Ten Freshman of the week last week after passing for 302 yards against Indiana and Mohamed Ibrahim received the honor after rushing for 157 yards and two touchdowns at Ohio State on Oct. 13. This is the first time ever that Minnesota has had more than one player named Big Ten Freshman of the Week in the same season.
