After the University of Minnesota take on Air Force in Colorado Springs Friday evening, 13 Gophers will travel to Fargo, N.D. to take part in the 48th annual Bison Open Saturday morning at 10 a.m.Â
Jake Allar, Ben Brancale, Brent Jones, Bailee O'Reilly and Bobby Steveson are all headed to Fargo to compete in the tournament. They will be joined by a contingent of unattached Minnesota wrestlers that includes Jake Gliva, Garrett Joles, Brayton Lee, Kasper McIntosh, Patrick McKee, Caden Steffen, Gable Steveson and Ryan Thomas.
Minnesota claimed one championship in last year's Bison Open tournament with Skyler Petry taking the 125-pound title. Petry went 4-0, picking up victories via decision, pin and tech fall. Two Gopher wrestlers heading to the open tournament that gained podium finishes a year ago include Brent Jones (Third) and Ben Brancale (Fourth).
Jake Allar and Bailee O'Reilly saw their first action at the Daktronics open a week ago. Allar finished the tournament with a 2-1 record and a second-place finish at 165-pounds. O'Reilly came away with a third-place finish, wrestling in a round robin bracket at 174. Bobby Steveson will see his first action of the season at the Bison Open.
All unattached Minnesota wrestlers saw action a week ago at the Daktronics Open with Gable Steveson picking up his first tournament title in the Maroon & Gold. Steveson gained a 3-0 record in Brookings and finished at the top of the podium in the heavyweight bracket. Patrick McKee, Brayton Lee and Caden Steffen all battled their way through the consolation bracket in South Dakota to claim third-place finishes. Ryan Thomas and Garrett Joles earned fifth-place finishes for Minnesota.Â
