Gophers Earn Road Sweep at Yale

Minnesota won 3-1 in game two of the non-conference series on the road Saturday.
NEW HAVEN, Ct. -- The Golden Gophers used a pair of first-period goals and an empty-netter in the final minute to skate to a 3-1 win over Yale at the Bulldogs' Ingalls Rink on Saturday. Abigail Boreen, Kippin Keller, and Grace Zumwinkle scored for the Maroon & Gold, and Minnesota improved to 15-2-1 overall with the win.
Minnesota (15-2-1, 9-2-1-0 WCHA) received two points each from Boreen (1g-1a) and Catie Skaja (2a) while Keller's first goal of the season proved to be the game-winner. The Gophers outshot the Bulldogs, 44-18, and Alex Gulstene finished with 17 saves.
Yale (2-10-0, 2-6-0 ECAC Hockey) played the Gophers much tighter in game two after Minnesota cruised to a 7-1 win in game one of the non- conference series. The Bulldogs got 41 saves from goaltender Tera Hofmann along with a goal from Tabea Botthof.Â
"Well, it was a hard-fought battle here tonight," head coach Brad Frost said. "Credit to Yale, we knew they were going to come out better than they did yesterday. They're a well-coached team, and they did a great job. It was kind of a workman-like effort for us tonight. We played well, but obviously it was close right there until the end. Our team did a really good job finding a way and getting a sweep on the road."
Boreen scored her second career goal to put the Gophers on the board at the 11:35 mark of the first period before Keller netted her first of the season with 3:34 remaining in the opening frame. Skaja set up both goals, and the Gophers took a two-goal lead into the locker room.
The teams played a scoreless second period despite Minnesota holding an 18-7 advantage in shots on goal over the middle 20 minutes. Yale's Botthof then cut the Gophers' lead in half with 15:23 remaining, making it a one-goal game early in the third period, but the Gophers finished it off. Zumwinkle tapped in an empty-net goal with 54 seconds remaining after the Bulldogs pulled Hofmann for an extra attacker, and the Gophers won their eighth-straight game.Â
Minnesota was scoreless on two power plays but perfect on the penalty kill at one-for-one.Â
The Gophers return home to wrap up the first half of the season by hosting Robert Morris on Friday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 8. Friday is Minnesota's annual Teddy Bear Toss, and the team's Skate with the Gophers event will take place after Saturday's game.
