Opponent Outlook: Non-Conference Road Slate

MINNEAPOLIS – The defending Big Ten Regular Season and Tournament Champion Gopher Baseball team returns next spring after an historic season in 2018, looking to build on the success of an NCAA Super Regional run.
The path will not be easy with the team's home slate at U.S. Bank Stadium eliminated for the season and six NCAA Tournament teams on the docket in non-conference along with the tough 24-game B1G schedule. Today, we take our next look, examining three teams the Gophers will meet in a three-game series each on the road this spring.

Dallas Baptist reached the NCAA Tournament last season, picking up a pair of wins at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional to cap a 42-21 season which included a 16-5 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference … head coach Dan Heefner returns for his 15th season with the Patriots, including the last 12 as head coach … DBU's offense ranked in the top 10 nationally in doubles (second, 150), slugging percentage (fourth, .495), home runs (sixth, 86), and walks (eighth, 338) … seven Patriots were selected in the 2018 MLB Draft … infielder Jimmy Glowenke returns for his sophomore season having hit .336 with 16 doubles and 10 big flies in 63 games last season … Minnesota owns a 3-1 record all-time against Dallas Baptist, including a sweep a three-game set in Dallas on March 19-21, 2009.

NC State also hosted NCAA Regional play last season in Raleigh, eventually bowing out to Auburn to close a 42-18 season which also included a 19-11 mark in the ACC … head coach Elliott Avent has spent 22 seasons leading the Wolfpack … NC State ranked 45th with a team batting average of .288 last season, while also landing fifth in home runs (87), 10th in slugging percentage (.477), and 24th in scoring (7.0 runs per nine) … catcher Patrick Bailey returns after claiming Freshman All-America honors from NCBWA lasts season, slugging .604 with 13 big flies … fellow Freshman All-American right-hander Reid Johnson finished 7-1 with a 3.06 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 64.2 innings … the Gophers and Wolfpack are knotted at 2-2 in the all-time series. The last meeting saw a ranked NC State knock off Minnesota 10-6 at the Metrodome back on March 2, 1996.

Long Beach State missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three seasons last year, finishing 27-30 with a 12-12 record for fifth place in the Big West Conference … head coach Troy Buckley returns for his ninth season at the Beach … Long Beach State ranked in the top-50 nationally as a pitching staff in both ERA (no. 48, 3.80), WHIP (no. 47, 1.32) and walks per nine innings (no. 31, 3.20) … the 49ers saw ace Clayton Andrews depart in the 2018 MLB Draft … Zak Baayoun returns for his junior season after finishing 9-3 in 14 starts, striking out 84 in 98.0 innings a season ago … Long Beach State owns a 3-1 record all-time against Minnesota and took 2-of-3 from the Gophers in a series at Siebert Field on May 12-14, 2017.
