The Gopher men's gymnastics team has been ranked No. 2 for the third consecutive season in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches' Poll, released Thursday.
In addition to the poll, senior captain Vitali Kan and sophomore Shane Wiskus have been named to the Big Ten Men's Gymnasts to Watch list. Kan is a two-time All-American on vault in 2017 and 2018, and tied for seventh in the event at the 2018 NCAA Championships with a 14.633. Wiskus is coming off of a Big Ten Gymnast and Freshman of the Year plaudits in 2018 and was also named CGA Rookie of the Year. At the NCAA Championships, he competed all-around, where he finished as the national runner-up and an All-American. Wiskus also earned All-American honors on rings, where he finished fourth, and high bar, where he finished seventh. He was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week seven times and was a First Team All-Big Ten selection.
Minnesota finished as national runner-up as a team in 2018, and the Gophers return All-Americans and seniors Shaun Herzog and Justin Karstadt, in addition to Kan and Wiskus. The team was recently ranked No. 4 in the College Gymnastics Association's preseason poll.
The team hosts its annual alumni meet on Jan. 5 at Maturi Pavilion before opening the season on the road at Air Force for the Rocky Mountain Open on Jan. 12. The Gophers begin Big Ten action Jan. 26 for a dual meet with Michigan at home, which will be aired live on BTN2Go and tape-delayed on Big Ten Network the following day.
