Gophers Garner Preseason All-American Honors from Collegiate Baseball
12/17/2018 12:53:00 PM | Baseball
With less than two months until the opening pitch of the 2019 season, Collegiate Baseball announced Monday its 2019 Preseason All-Americans, powered by Diamond Sports, with Gopher Baseball sophomore pitchers Patrick Fredrickson and Max Meyer each claiming a spot among the honorees.
Fredrickson earned a Second Team All-America nod from Collegiate Baseball as a starting pitcher, while Meyer landed on the Third Team as a reliever. The duo each received Freshman All-America honors in 2018 from five different organizations, including Collegiate Baseball. D1Baseball, Collegiate Baseball, and ABCA/Rawlings also chose the pair as overall All-Americans.
Following the 2018 season, Fredrickson was named the National Freshman Pitcher of the Year by Collegiate Baseball. The Big Ten Pitcher and Freshman of the Year posted a 9-0 record and 1.86 ERA while striking out 73 batters in 97.0 innings during his rookie campaign. He ranked 12th in the nation in ERA and in the top-50 nationally with a 1.01 WHIP and 6.59 hits allowed per nine innings. Opponents batted just .209 against the native of right-hander.
Collegiate Baseball also honored Meyer as its Freshman Relief Pitcher of the Year in 2018. Before spending the summer with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, Meyer matched the Gopher program record with 16 saves in 26 appearances. He posted a 2-3 record and 2.06 ERA, striking out 54 batters compared to just 13 walks in his 43.2 innings last season. During his rookie season, the right-hander allowed opponents to bat just .163 against him and posted a 0.94 WHIP. His 16 saves also ranked third in all of NCAA Division I.
Minnesota faces stiff competition this season with 10 players from teams on the 2019 schedule receiving Preseason All-America honors. The Gophers are the only Big Ten team with multiple Preseason All-America honorees from Collegiate Baseball this year.
Gopher Baseball season tickets are available now! The Maroon & Gold return to campus on Friday, March 29 against Nebraska. This 21-game package includes Minnesota's game against Oklahoma at Target Field on Saturday, April 20. Click here to purchase yours today.
