Opponent Outlook: Seattle Baseball Showcase & More

MINNEAPOLIS – The defending Big Ten Regular Season and Tournament Champion Gopher Baseball team returns next spring after an historic season in 2018, looking to build on the success of an NCAA Super Regional run.
The path will not be easy with the team's home slate at U.S. Bank Stadium eliminated for the season and six NCAA Tournament teams on the docket in non-conference along with the tough 24-game B1G schedule. Today, we take our next look, examining four teams that the Gophers will face in single games on the West Coast, including a pair of opponents from the Seattle Baseball Showcase at Safeco Field in early March, the third of which (Oregon State) was covered in a previous installment.

San Diego stood among the teams receiving votes in Collegiate Baseball's Preseason Fabulous 40 released earlier this week after finishing 23-32 a season ago, and 12-14 in the West Coast Conference … head coach Rich Hill is in his 20th season leading the Toreros … USD ranked in the top-50 nationally in batting average (no. 44) at .288 … catcher Adam Kerner returns after a Freshman All-America Second Team selection a year ago from Baseball America, hitting .338 with a team-leading 15 doubles … left-hander Chris Murphy finished 6-5 with a 4.20 ERA in 13 starts and racked up 91 strikeouts in 81.1 innings … Minnesota owns a 3-2 record all-time against San Diego, but the two teams have not met since the 1998 season when the two teams split a four-game set at the Metrodome from Feb. 26 - March 1.

Washington also ranked among the teams receiving votes in Collegiate Baseball's Preseason Top 40 … the Huskies lost in the College World Series, knocked off by eventual National Champion Oregon State, to finish 35-26 on the year after going 20-10 in the Pac-12 … head coach Lindsay Meggs is back for his ninth year … Washington's pitching staff ranked no. 50 in the nation in ERA at 3.81, no. 46 in WHIP with 1.32, and no. 10 in walks at 2.93 per nine innings … Mason Cerrillo returns having led the Huskies with a .341 batting average, scoring 34 runs and driving in 21 with 14 doubles on the year … Joe Wainhouse batted .306 with a team-leading 19 home runs, 61 RBIs, and 46 runs scored in 2018 … Stevie Emanuels was the team's bullpen fireman, 8-2 in 34 games but just one start, striking out 32 in 45.1 innings… the Huskies hold a 5-4 edge in the all-time series with the Gophers after knocking off Minnesota 6-4 in 10 innings last season at the DQ Classic-Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge on March 3, 2018.

Seattle U finished 34-23 last season and 13-11 in the WAC, bowing out in the conference tournament … head coach Donny Harrel has been with the Redhawks for 10 seasons … Seattle ranked no. 73 in the nation in batting average at .281 … catcher Justin Mazzone returns having led the Redhawks with a .339 batting average in 49 games, including 29 starts … Austin Lively paced Seattle with 48 runs scored, getting on-base at a .446 clip … left-hander Jake Prizina finished 2018 going 8-1 with a 3.82 ERA in 19 games, including 15 starts, striking out 92 in 99.0 innings … Minnesota has a 4-3 lead in the all-time series with Seattle after opening U.S. Bank Stadium with a three-game series sweep of the Redhawks on Feb. 24-26, 2017.
