• After more than three weeks away, the Minnesota men's basketball team returns to Williams Arena on Wednesday in the Gophers' Big Ten home opener against the 24th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers. It will be the second-straight ranked opponent for the Gophers, who played back-to-back ranked foes just once last year (Alabama, Miami).
• The Gophers join in mourning the loss of Tayra McFarlane, mother of senior guard Dupree McBrayer, McFarlane lost her battle with cancer earlier this week, and will be honored prior to the start of Wednesday night's game with a moment of silence.
• Senior forward Jordan Murphy has earned some impressive accolades leading into the start of the season. The San Antonio, Texas native was a Preseason All-Big Ten Team selection as well as named to the Naismith Trophy, John Wooden Award and Lute Olson Award watch lists for top college basketball player in the nation, as well as the Karl Malone Award watch list for the top power forward in the country.
• On Sunday night, Murphy became the 14th player in Big Ten history to pull down more than 1,000 career rebounds. He is just one point shy of 1,400 for his career, which would make him the 11th player in Big Ten history with 1,400+ points and 1,000+ career rebounds. Additionally, Murphy is tied with Jim Brewer for the school record with 51 career double-doubles.
• Guard Gabe Kalscheur was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Nov. 26. Kalscheur averaged 14 points, 2.7 rebounds and one steal per game, including a career-high 25 points in the win over Santa Clara. He also made the game-winning 3-pointer in the victory over Washington to claim the tournament championship.
