LAST TIME OUT - NORTHWESTERN

The Gophers have lost three straight, including four of the last five, but have done so with five different lineups. Only Jake Short, Nick Wanzek, Chris Pfarr and Rylee Streifel have made appearances in all 14 duals for the Gophers this season. Northwestern was no different, with four starters out, the Gophers battled to the final match, leading 18-14, but fell after a pin, 20-18.

"Overall I think our guys wrestled okay considering we had four starters out for this dual," head coach Brandon Eggum said after the dual. " I loved the way our seniors wrestled today. Short coming out and scoring big points was really impressive. Wanzek as well, he's having a great season. I know Chris is frustrated with his loss, but I think the great things these seniors have done is they have been great leaders as far as how they live their life."

THE RIVARLY

The Gophers and Hawkeyes have been battling eachother on the mat for nearly 100 years. The first meeting came in 1921. Minnesota is 28-73-1 all-time against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Tommy Thorn is the only active wrestler to have a win in a dual against Iowa, holding a 2-0 record in duals against the Hawkeyes.

KRONE CAPTURES FIRST WIN AT 197

Brandon Krone was able to pick up his first win at 197-pounds this last Sunday against Northwestern. Weighing in at 182.2-pounds, Krone overcame his opponent's size with an incredible move at the end of his match to finish off a comeback after trailing 4-1 at one point in the match.

"I've tried to do that move a couple of times," Krone said after his victory. "I was pretty excited about pulling it off in that moment."

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

The Gophers will remain on the road for the remainder of the season. Minnesota will take on some tough opponents for the rest of the season, with three of the final four against currently ranked opponents in Iowa, Rutgers and Rider.

MATCHES TO WATCH - IOWA

The Gophers and the Hawkeyes will feature potentially three ranked matchups at 125, 157 and 165 pounds. Ethan Lizak will take on freshman Spencer Lee who has been taking the wrestling world by storm with his 10-1 record, including an upsest of formally No. 1 Nathan Tomasello of Ohio State. No. 8 Nick Wanzek will also have a top-10 matchup against No. 7 Alex Marinelli, a reshirt freshman. Jake Short will face off against No. 2 Michael Kemerer once again, and will be looking for his first win against the redshirt sophomore. Another potentially notable matchup comes at 184-pounds with either Dylan Anderson or Brandon Krone taking on No. 20 Mitch Bowman, who just re-entered the InterMat polls this week.

WANZEK'S WILD SCHEDULE

Nick Wanzek has the toughest part of his season, and has continued to impress in the 165-pound class. His match Friday against No. 7 Alex Marinelli, Wanzek will face his fifth match against a top-10 opponent over the past month. During that stretch, Wanzek has collected a 2-2 record, with his losses only coming against the current No. 1 and No. 2 ranked wrestlers in the country.

DON PARKER OPEN PARTICIPANTS

The Gophers will send seven to the Don Parker Open this wekeend. Brent Jones (141), Jakob Bergeland (149), Tyler Waterson (149), James Berg (157), Alex Crowe (157), Carson Brolsma (165) and Bailee O'Reilly (174) will take on the event that takes place in Eau Claire, Wis.
