Gophers Take Eighth in First Tournament of Spring Season

PALM COAST, Fla. -- The Minnesota men's golf team finished in eighth place with a 2-2 mark at the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Palm Coast, Fla., on Saturday.
The Golden Gophers faced Purdue in their final matchup of pool play, losing 0-4-2 in their first defeat of the tournament after fog delay shortened the round to just nine holes. In the afternoon, they faced Ohio State in the seventh place match, losing 0-6-0.
Riley Johnson and Runar Arnorsson both halved their first matches against Purdue, giving the Gophers one point in the standings. In the second match of the day, Johnson lost three and two, while Arnorsson lost six and four.
Thomas Longbella kept it close against Jason Hong of Purdue, losing by one on the last hole and scoring one birdie in his round. He lost four and two in his second match of the day.
Angus Flanagan and Evan Long each played in both matches. Flanagan lost two and one in the matchup versus Purdue and three and two against Ohio State. Long lost four and three in his first match and three and two in his second match.
Charlie Duensing played in the first match, losing three and two, while Peter Jones appeared in the second match, losing six and four.
The Big Ten Network will broadcast the 2018 Big Ten Match Play Championship on Saturday, March 3 at 5:30 p.m. CT.
The Gophers will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 24 against the University of Houston.
