Gophers to Celebrate Seniors

MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 11 Golden Gopher women's track & field team will honor its 18 graduating seniors at the Parents Day Invite this Saturday.
Leading the Gophers' senior class are five fifth-year seniors: captains Titania Markland and Madeline Strandemo, and Amelia Barczi, Sarah Klecker, and Nicolle Murphy. Agnes Esser, captain Emma Spagnola, Heta Tuuri, and Emerald Egwim also wrap up their Gophers careers as true seniors having competed for four years for the Maroon & Gold.
Redshirt juniors Courtney Alama, Emily Castanias, Molly Eastman, Nina Horvath, Macy Narr, Bailey Ness, Lindsey Smits, and Rachel Wians are also graduating this year while graduate student transfer Delaney FitzPatrick finishes out her collegiate eligibility.
Together, Minnesota's 18 seniors have combined for nine All-America awards, including two each by Murphy (2015 and 2016 javelin first team), Egwim (2015 outdoor 4x400m relay second team and 2017 indoor 400m second team), and Spagnola (2017 60m hurdles and 100m hurdles second team), and one by Markland (2015 outdoor 4x400m relay second team), Esser (2016 discus second team), and Strandemo (2017 3,000m steeplechase second team).
The seniors also have one NCAA West Prelim event title, won be Tuuri in high jump in 2016, and 14 All-Big Ten awards, including five first team honors and nine second team honors. Strandemo (2017 mile and 2017 3,000m steeplechase), Egwim (2017 outdoor 400m), Markland (2016 600m), and Murphy (2016 javelin) are individual Big Ten champions, and the Gophers seniors led Minnesota to a share of B1G team crown at the 2016 Big Ten Outdoor Championship.
Action gets underway at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse at 10 a.m. CT Saturday, and the senior recognition is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. CT.
