Gophers Fall to No. 8 Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In front of a crowd of 953 softball fans, a pair of Top-15 teams displayed their talent on both sides of the ball in what felt like a June contest in Oklahoma City. No. 14 Minnesota (5-1) fell to No. 8 Florida State (6-0) by the narrowest margin Friday night in the first day of the 2018 Big Ten/ACC Challenge, 3-2.
Sophomore Carlie Brandt led the Gophers at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance. Brandt recorded one of her two doubles in her first at bat of the night driving in the Gophers first run of the game.
Jumping on the Seminoles starter Meghan King (3-0) early 1-0, the Gophers' defense worked out of jams in the second and third inning. Minnesota starter Amber Fiser (3-1) struck out the side to end the fourth following a leadoff single.
Florida State tied the affair between the squads, stringing together a run in the fifth on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch. Buckling down, Minnesota escaped the fifth on a ground out leaving the game tied at one a piece.
Minnesota went quietly in their half of the six, but the Seminole bats were just waking up. Sydney Sherrill launched a double to the left center wall driving in the game-winning runs.
The Gophers put up one last rally in the seventh behind a double from Brandt and a single by Ellee Jensen to keep the Gophers hopes alive. MaKenna Partain, displaying her warning track power, sent a long sacrifice fly to center scoring Brandt to cut the FSU lead to 3-2. With two outs, Kendyl Lindaman sent a shot down the first base line but an impressive stop by FSU's Carsyn Gordon to then step on the bag ended the game.
Action of the 2018 Big Ten/ACC Challenge continues Saturday, February 17 as Minnesota takes on Notre Dame at 11:30 a.m. CT before a rematch with Florida State at 2 p.m. CT.
