Gophers Power Past Thundering Herd, 6-1

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota defeated Marshall 6-1 Saturday, advancing to the finals of the Courtside Classic against Utah Sunday. Minnesota improves to 4-0 on the season, doing so for the first time since 2014.
"Today felt really great. Marshall is well coached, and is a really competitive team," head coach Catrina Thompsaon said. "They're consistent, really make you work, and they're going to fight till the end, so I'm really proud of the way our girls worked."
Doubles
The pairing of Tina Kreinis and Annemarie Emme defeated their opponents 6-3, while Caitlyn Merzbacher and Mehvish Safdar won 6-3. Caroline Ryba and Cammy Frei were leading 5-4 during their match before clinching the doubles point.
"I thought Caitlyn (Merzbacher) and Mehvish (Safdar) took over the net and got really aggressive, so that helped us win the No. 1 singles spot," Thompson said.
Singles
Camila Vargas Gomez won the No. 6 singles spot 6-2, 6-0, followed by Kreinis winning the No. 2 spot 6-2, 0-6, 6-1. Then, Merzbacher clinched the match win for the Gophers with a 6-4, 7-5 win, followed by a 6-4, 6-3 win from Barbara Mancera in the No. 4 singles spot. Emme fell in the No. 3 singles spot 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, followed by a win in the No. 1 spot from Ryba, a 6-2, 6-4, 6-5 win.

"I know (Mancera) at No. 4 singles was down 4-1, and it was huge to see her come back and get the win in straight sets," Thompson said.

Minnesota will face Utah Sunday at 9:00 a.m. at Baseline Tennis Center, vying for their first program championship in the Courtside Classic.
