MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 10 Golden Gopher women's track & field team competed at three meets Friday evening as Minnesota split the squad among the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn., and the UST Showcase hosted by the University of St. Thomas.
Iowa State Classic
Bethany Hasz set a new Minnesota program record in the 3,000m to lead the Gophers at the Iowa State Classic Friday evening. The Gophers also competed in the high jump, 200m, and 5,000m on day one of the ISU Classic.
Hasz led three Gophers in the seeded section of the 3,000m in a program-record time of 9:13.95, placing seventh at the meet. Megan Hasz placed 14th in a career-best 9:26.87 to move into ninth among all-time Gophers, and Madeline Strandemo was 17th in 9:31.13. B. Hasz improved on the previous Gophers' record of 9:17.47 held by Megan Duwell since 2010; Strandemo holds the third-ranked time in program history at 9:17.54.
Patty O'Brien and Elyse Prescott raced the unseeded section of the 3,000m. O'Brien placed fifth in a season-best 9:45.85 while Prescott was 13th in 9:52.92.
Heta Tuuri and Taylor Wiebke tied for first place in high jump as both cleared 1.79m (5-10.50). Wiebke's performance matched her career best, which ranks second in program history, while Tuuri tied her season-best mark.
Three Gophers ran the 200m at the ISU Classic, led by Sophia Anderson placing 10th in 25.32 seconds. Lindsey Smits recorded a career-best time of 25.60 for 13th place, and Meleah Biermaier finished 18th (27.00). Also on the track,Emily Betz placed 19th in the unseeded section of the 5,000m in a career-best 17:09.88.
Music City Challenge
Day one of the Music City Challenge saw the Gophers compete in high jump, long jump, and the 200-meter dash.
Ashley Ramacher cleared 1.66m (5-05.25) to tie for fourth in high jump while Ayesha Champagnie (5.88m, 19-03.25) and Lorean Murray (5.52m, 18-01.50) placed fifth and 13th, respectively, in the long jump.
In the 200m, Brieasha Hobbs clocked a career-best time of 24.52 seconds to win her heat and place eighth overall while Erin Huls ran a career-best 25.93 to place 40th overall.
UST Showcase
Minnesota won five event titles at the UST Showcase Friday night as members of the team competed locally at the University of St. Thomas. Kelli Schmidt (600m), Paige Peschel (800m), and Macy Narr (pole vault) won their events to lead the Maroon & Gold while unattached Gophers Olivia Hummel (mile) and Tess Keyzers (shot put) also took home titles.
