Gophers Earn All-American Honors in 800 Free Relay

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Minnesota women's swimming and diving kicked off the NCAA Championship meet in record breaking fashion Wednesday night at the McCrokle Aquatic Center. Posting a new school record time of 6:56.40, the 800 freestyle relay team of Danielle Nack, Chantal Nack, Mackenzie Padington and Zoe Avestruz swam to an All-American eighth place finish.
"To start the NCAA Championships with a school record and All-American performance was so much fun," said head coach Kelly Kremer. I can't say enough about our Gopher women and how they conducted themselves tonight. We have a long meet ahead, but this was a great way to start."
Highlighting the race was freshman Mackenzie Padington who entered the pool on the third exchange. Padington swimming the fastest split of the group in 1:43.27.
With the top-eight finish the Gophers sit with 22 team points after day one of the event.
The championship meet continues Thursday morning with preliminary heats at 9 a.m. CT. The Gophers will have participants in the 500 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving, 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay on day two.
