TEMPE, Ariz. - A trio of second-place finishes by the University of Minnesota men's track & field program kicked off the 2018 outdoor campaign this weekend at Arizona State's Baldy Castillo Invitational.

The Maroon & Gold were led runner-up showings by Sammie Houston in the triple jump, Ryan Lockard in the high jump and Alec Basten in the 2,000 meter steeplechase.

Houston's performance was one of several personal records and top-10 all-time Gophers performances for Minnesota this weekend as Houston cleared 15.50 meters (50-10.25 ft.) to finish second and jump to eighth on Minnesota's all-time top performers list. Lockard added a runner-up showing in the men's high jump at 2.08 meters (6-09.75 ft.).

Minnesota also had three of the top four finishers in the 2,000 meter steeplechase with Basten finishing second at 5:50.53, Nick Rink coming in third at 5:52.31 and Jack Manderscheid picking up a fourth-place finish at 5:53.19.

The Gophers boasted three of the top four finishers in the hammer throw with Jon Nerdal leading the way in third with a personal record of 63.36 meters (207-10 ft.). Kieran McKeag came in fourth with his own personal record at 61.90 meters (203-01 ft.) while Connor Rousemiller finished eighth at 57.72 meters (189-04 ft.). Nerdal and McKeag now rank eighth and ninth, respectively, in Gophers history.

Lucas Trapp led a contingency of four Gophers in the top six of the 800 meters with Trapp finishing third at 1:50.18 followed by Shane Streich at 1:51.26 in fourth, Dawson LaRance in fifth at 1:53.21 and Matt Rosen in sixth at 1:55.13.

The Gophers had two groups in the 4x400 meter relay with Ben Psicihulis, Matthew Baker, Josh Tracy and Clayton Johnson finishing third at 3:11.25 and Mason Roomes, Chris Trotter, Shane Streich and LaRance coming in seventh at 3:22.25. Roomes also joined Jonathan Webb, Eric Walker and Zach Nelson on the 4x100 meter relay team that finished third in 40.56 while also picking up a 10th-place finish in the long jump at 6.90 meters (22-07.75 ft.). Johnson and Baker also finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles at 52.82 and 53.42. Johnson's personal record stands as the 10th-fastest time in program history. Nelson also finished seventh in the 100 meters at 10.63.

Meanwhile, the Maroon & Gold put four of the top 10 runners in the 1,500 meters with Derek Wiebke leading the way at 3:50.01 in fifth. Connor Olson was seventh at 3:52.28 followed in eighth by Sam Carlson at 3:52.80 and Hamza Ali in 10th at 3:53.48. Jonathan Tharaldsen finished fifth in the shot put at 17.28 meters (56-08.50 ft.) while Jon Tollefson finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.75.
