Gophers Open Weekend with Three Titles at UCLA

LOS ANGELES - The University of Minnesota men's track & field program kicked off the weekend by competing in four events at UCLA's Bob Larsen Distance Carnival on Friday night, winning three events and picking up the runner-up in the fourth.
Kieran McKeag (hammer throw), Shane Streich (mile) and Nick Rink (3,000 meter steeplechase) picked up event titles for the Maroon & Gold at Drake Stadium.
Behind McKeag's win in the hammer throw, the Gophers carried three of the top five finishers in the event. McKeag's sixth and final attempt of the afternoon sailed 62.44 meters (204-10 ft.) - a mark that gave the thrower his second personal record in the hammer throw in as many meets this season. He remains eighth all-time on Minnesota's top performers list. Jon Nerdal finished third on Friday at 59.29 meters (194-06 ft.) while Connor Rousemiller came in fifth at 55.11 meters (180-09 ft.).
The Maroon & Gold had three of the top six competitors in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with Rink and Jack Manderscheid finishing first and second, respectively. Rink clocked a 8:59.82 to win the race with Manderscheid following quickly at 9:00.06. Alex Plasencia finished sixth at 9:07.93.
Minnesota also carried two of the top five finishers in the mile with Streich pacing the competition at 4:04.35 while Evan Ferlic finished fifth at 4:09.02.
Meanwhile, Joey Duer, Connor Olson and Charlie Lawrence represented the Gophers in the top-10 of the 5,000 meters with Duerr posting a runner-up showing at 14:22.03. Olson finished fourth at 14:30.50 while Lawrence ran a 14:47.97 to come in eighth.
Minnesota continues to compete at UCLA on Saturday with the Jim Bush Legends Invitational at Drake Stadium.
