Gophers Sweep Scarlet Knights 7-0

Minneapolis, Minn. -- The University of Minnesota Women's Tennis team swept Big Ten foe Rutgers en route to improving their Big Ten record to 3-0 on the season.
"It's great to get the win here confidence-wise," head coach Catrina Thompson said. "Seeing everybody on their court doing their job is something we talk about all the time."
With wins in the No. 4 and No. 5 singles spots, Barbara Mancera and Caitlyn Merzbacher continued their hot streaks. Mancera is now 15-5 in singles play, and Merzbacher is 15-2, both good for most wins on the team.
"Both Caitlyn and Bita have done an incredible job," Thompson said of Merzbacher and Mancera, both juniors. "They're working hard, and that's something we expect from our upperclassmen."
Doubles
Minnesota faced tough opposition in the doubles portion of the competition. The pairing of Tina Kreinis and Annemarie Emme edged out their opponents 6-4 in the No. 2 doubles spot, while Caroline Ryba and River Hart won their No. 3 doubles match 6-3. Mehvish Safdar and Caitlyn Merzbacher were all tied up 5-5 in No. 1 doubles upon clinch.
Singles
Camila Vargas Gomez dominated her opponent in No. 6 singles to earn Minnesota a 2-0 lead. Vargas Gomez faced no trouble, winning her match without dropping a single game. Then, Emme won in straight sets as well, winning No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-1. Mancera won her match in No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-1 to clinch the match for Minnesota. Ryba and Merzbacher both won their matches in straight sets as well, a 6-2, 6-3 win for Ryba, and a 6-1, 7-5 win for Merzbacher. Tina Kreinis played the lone three-set match in No. 2 singles. After dropping the first set 2-6, Kreinis clawed back to win her second set 6-3, and win the tiebreaker 10-6.

Minnesota will return home for another Big Ten match against Michigan on Friday before hitting the road to face Indiana on Sunday.
