MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Gopher Hockey freshman Casey Mittelstadt has agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Buffalo Sabres, who drafted the forward eighth overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., Mittelstadt recorded 30 points (11 goals, 19 assists) in 34 games for the Gophers this year, earning Big Ten All-Freshman honors. He finished second on the team in scoring and is currently tied for ninth in scoring among NCAA rookies.

Mittelstadt missed three games this season while helping the U.S. National Junior Team capture a bronze medal at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship. The freshman was voted the Most Valuable Player of the tournament after leading the event with 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in seven games.

A graduate of Eden Prairie High School, Mittelstadt was named Minnesota's Mr. Hockey in 2017 as the state's top boys' hockey player. He led the Eagles to four-straight state tournaments and was a two-time all-state honoree.
