MINNEAPOLIS -- With one day of competition finished, the Minnesota men's golf team is in 22nd place at The Goodwin in Palo Alto, Calif. Freshman Angus Flanagan leads the team with a one-over score of 72 at the Harding Park Golf Course.
The Gophers finished the first round with a score of 293, nine shots over par. The team is currently one shot back from Arizona State, Cal Poly and Sonoma State University. It is also only two shots behind UC Davis and San Francisco. Host-school Stanford leads the tournament with a seven-under 277.
Flanagan leads the team for the third tournament in a row. With his score of 72, he is tied for 45th place. He was consistent for the Gophers, hitting par on 15 holes with one birdie.
Senior Peter Jones is currently second on the team in his first tournament of the spring. He carded a two-over 73 on the first day of play and is currently tied for 61st. He had two birdies, as well as an eagle on the ninth hole.
Riley Johnson carded a 74 through 18 holes and is tied for 76th. Thomas Longbella is also tied for 76th after going three over par. Rúnar Arnorsson posted a 76, putting him five over par.
Jeffrey Swengle of Stanford leads the individual competition after an eight-under 63 on the first day.
