CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The Gopher Rowing team raced three boats at the Doc Hosea Invitational on Saturday morning, claiming a second-place finish in the second varsity 8+ grand final.
No. 20 Minnesota finished second to the top-ranked team in the field, No. 14 Syracuse as the 2v8 of Elyse Terlion (coxswain), Sarah Von der Goltz, Maura Dahl, Kat Hetico, Christina Anderson, Abby Rieser, Emily Appold, Darcy Jennings, and Katie VanCamp finished at 6:43.0 just behind the Orange's finish at 6:42.2.
"We're happy with the 2v8. I thought that's about how they'd finish," said head coach Wendy Davis. "That we were so close to Syracuse is great. It shows the depth that we have on this team. They weren't perfect, but they raced well."
The Gophers 1v8 team of Anna Stockstad (cox), Kortney Luedloff, Bee Lovick, Lauren Miller, Allison Sterneman, Addie Morris, Lauren Burrows-Cheng, Sara Nelson, and Sarah Reimann earned a spot in the petite final, finishing first with a time of 6:40.05 ahead of second-place Navy, who finished at 6:42.71. The 1v4 team of Anna Frazier (cox), Lizsy Hiebel, Allie Schmidt, Maggie Bostwick, and Natalie Stratton earned a spot in the grand final but finished fifth at 7:40.83. Indiana finished first at 7:29.6
"We still have some work to do with the 1v8," said Davis. "But they are extremely motivated to get the work done. The 1v4 made the final and came in fifth. That's about where we belong at this time of year, but there's a lot of speed to be gained."
The next stop for the Gophers is the Wisconsin Double Dual next Saturday, April 7 in Madison.
"We go into the double dual knowing we have some work to do but that we are legitimate, and we want to continue to improve in the next couple of weeks," said Davis.
