Three Gophers in Top Ten at Hawkeye Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota men's golf team is tied for third after one round of the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa. Seniors Riley Johnson and Rúnar Arnorsson and freshman Angus Flanagan are tied for fifth to lead the way.
The Golden Gophers scored a 285 on the first day, good for three under par. The team is tied with host-Iowa for third, and is four strokes ahead of Michigan State in fifth. Kansas State is in second at six under par, while Iowa State leads the tournament with an eight-under 280.
Johnson carded a two-under 70 in the first round to put him in the top 10 at the end of the day. He got off to a strong start with a birdie on his second hole, and added two more later in the round.
Flanagan put himself on pace for his first top 10 finish of the spring after scoring a 70 through the first 18 holes like his teammate Johnson. Flanagan made five birdies, including one on his first hole of the day.
Arnorsson rounded out the Gophers' appearances in the top 10, scoring his own round of 70. He recorded four birdies in the first round, as well as an eagle. His eagle was one of two on the 15th hole, and one of only three on the day for the field.
Sophomore Thomas Longbella went three-over in the first round, putting him in a tie for 37th. Junior Peter Jones, the final player in lineup, went nine over par, to find himself in a tie for 70th.
Freshman Evan Long is competing as an individual and scored a six-over 78. He is in a tie for 59th.
Jeremy Gandon of Kansas State leads the individual competition, scoring a six-under 66 in the first round of play.
The Gophers will play the second and third rounds of the Hawkeye Invitational on Saturday. The second round will tee-off at 9 a.m. CDT with the final 36 holes being played back-to-back.
