No. 13 Gophers Win 11 Titles at Baylor

WACO, Texas - Emma Spagnola won two titles to lead Minnesota as the No. 13 Golden Gopher women's track & field team combined to win 11 events at the Baylor Invitational at Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium in Waco, Texas, on Saturday.
On the track, Minnesota won four titles, led by Spagnola taking the top spot in both the 100m hurdles (13.51 seconds) and the 400m hurdles (1:00.01). Spagnola led four Gophers in the top four in the 400m hurdles as Rachel Schow (1:00.65) was second followed by Erin Huls (1:01.72) and Lindsey Smits (1:02.32).
Emerald Egwim was also victorious on the track, winning her outdoor 400m debut by clocking a first-place time of 53.99 seconds; she finished as runner-up in the 200m (24.31) as well. Paige Peschel topped the 800m field in 2:13.58 to round out the Gophers' winning performances on the track.
Minnesota claimed seven more event crowns in the field events, including sweeping the throwing events. Nicolle Murphy (javelin), Temi Ogunrinde (hammer throw), and Agnes Esser (discus) won their third titles of the season in their respective events to lead the Gophers.
Murphy threw 54.37m (178-04) to top the javelin field while Ogunrinde led three Gophers in the top three in the hammer throw, throwing 62.14m (203-10) for first place ahead of runner-up Esser (61.31m, 201-02) and Nayoka Clunis (57.49m, 188-07) in third.
Along with her hammer throw runner-up finish, Esser won discus with a throw of 54.14m (177-07). Kiley Sabin rounded out Minnesota's event champions in the throws, recording a mark of 15.68m (51-05.50) to win shot put, while Shay Nielsen claimed the runner-up spot in shot with a throw of 14.33m (47-00.25).
Minnesota also won high jump, triple jump, and pole vault in field event action. Heta Turri won high jump by clearing 1.76m (5-09.25) and Lorean Murray won triple jump with a mark of 12.19m (40-00.00). Karlie Place won pole vault, clearing 3.88m (12-08.75).
The Gophers wrapped up the meet by putting two 4x400m relay teams among the top three, led by the team of Huls, Titania Markland, Smits, and Kelli Schmidt running 3:47.96 for second place behind host Baylor.
Minnesota is off from competition next week before resuming its outdoor slate at four meets on Thursday, April 19 through Saturday, April 21 as the team competes at the Brian Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif., Mt. SAC Relays at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State in Long Beach, Calif., and the Holst Invitational hosted by Concordia-St. Paul in St. Paul, Minn.
