Rockies Select Vavra in Third Round of MLB Draft

Gopher Baseball’s shortstop Terrin Vavra learned his next baseball home on Tuesday when the Colorado Rockies selected the All-American with the 18th pick in the third round of the MLB Entry Draft, 96th overall.
Vava leads the Gophers with a .393 batting average in 56 games this season. He’s slugged a team-leading 10 home runs while driving in 59 runs, crossing the plate 54 times, and swiping eight bases in nine attempts. He earned First Team All-America status from Baseball America last week, a First Team All-Big Ten selection for the first time in his career. This past weekend, he helped lead Minnesota to its first NCAA Regional title in 41 years, landing the title of Minneapolis Regional Most Outstanding Player.
Vavra’s batting average ranks 11th in the nation. He also ranks among the best in the NCAA with 84 hits (38th), a .631 slugging percentage (51st), a .463 on-base percentage (52nd), and 135 total bases (59th).
The last Minnesota player drafted that early was Michael Kvasnicka, a first-round pick in 2010. Three Gophers, including current freshman Max Meyer, were selected in last year’s draft: starting pitcher Lucas Gilbreath in the seventh round by the same Rockies squad and relief pitcher Brian Glowicki by the Chicago Cubs in the 10th round.
Vavra and No. 14 national seed Minnesota take on No. 3 seed Oregon State in the NCAA Super Regional round this weekend. First pitch is set for Friday at 2 p.m. PT.
