EUGENE, Ore. -- Seven Gophers earned eight total Second Team All-America awards as the No. 10 University of Minnesota women's track & field team kicked off the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field on Thursday.

Emerald Egwim earned two All-America awards to lead the Maroon & Gold, placing 12th in the open 400m and finishing 14th in the 4x400m relay with Rachel Schow, Titania Markland, and Val Larson. Meanwhile, Nicolle Murphy garnered All-America status in the javelin, and Temi Ogunrinde and Nayoka Clunis secured All-America honors with top-15 finishes in the hammer throw.

Three Gophers qualified for multiple events at the national meet. Egwim placed 12th in the 400m in 52.57 seconds, and Markland placed 17 in 52.98 seconds. The duo teamed up on Minnesota's third-ever NCAA qualifying 4x400m relay team as well, placing 14th with Schow and Larson in 3:35.10.

Emma Spagnola, who joined Egwim and Markland as a two-event NCAA qualifier, punched her ticket to Saturday's 400m hurdles final with a seventh-place finish in the semifinal round, clocking a time of 57.54 seconds. She also placed sixth in her heat and 17th overall in the 100m hurdles in 13.25 seconds.

Other action on the track saw Madeline Strandemo place 10th in her heat of the 3,000m steeplechase in 10:11.93, which landed her 18th overall.

Ogunrinde led the Gophers in the field events, securing her first All-America award of her career with a ninth-place finish in hammer throw with a mark of 62.90m (206-04). Clunis also garnered All-American status with a 15th-place showing (61.03m, 200-02).

Murphy placed 14th in the javelin with a mark of 49.89m (163-08), earning her third All-America award of her career. Kiley Sabin rounded out Minnesota's day one competitors with a throw of 15.95m (52-04) for 18th place in the shot put.

NCAA Championship competition continues for the Gophers with Ayesha Champagnie kicking off the heptathlon on Friday. Saturday's events include Spagnola in the 400m hurdles final, Heta Tuuri and Ashley Ramacher in the high jump, and Agnes Esser in the discus.
