Gopher Baseball Summer Update (July 10)

The Gopher Baseball team is represented across the country this summer with players competing in each of the top collegiate leagues. Follow along with this bi-weekly update to learn about how the Gophers are performing this summer. Check out how the student athletes performed up until June 26 in our last update.

Northwoods League
Joshua Culliver (Waterloo Bucks) - Stats
Culliver has made six scoreless appearances out of the Bucks bullpen over the past two weeks, lowering his ERA to 5.28 while allowing just two hits in 8.1 innings of work. He picked up a victory with 1.2 innings of work as Waterloo downed Thunder Bay 3-2 on July 2.

Ryan Duffy (Mankato MoonDogs) - Stats
After allowing six runs in his first two appearances for the Moon Dogs, Duffy has come back with scoreless appearances in 3-of-5 outings. On June 29, he threw three scoreless innings to pick up the victory against La Crosse, scattering three hits while striking out four. On the year, he has struck out seven batters in 7.0 innings.

Drew Hmielewski (Eau Claire Express) - Stats
Hmielewski continues to make an impact for the Express both at the plate and on the mound this season. Last time out, he picked up a victory in relief against La Crosse on July 7, and he has so far allowed just seven hits in 5.0 innings of work, striking out four. With the bat, he's hitting .256 with a double and a triple, driving in eight runs.

Bubba Horton (Fond du Lac Dock Spiders) - Stats
Horton has made three relief appearances for Fond du Lac in the last two weeks, striking out six batters in 7.0 innings of work. He's scattered seven hits in those seven innings and for the season has a 3.55 ERA in six games, totaling 12.2 innings.

Danny Kapala (Waterloo Bucks) - Stats
Kapala has made two appearances for the Bucks, taking a defeat with 5.0 innings last time out against St. Cloud. Despite not being able to get in the win column yet, Kapala has struck out 22 batters in 21.2 innings so far this season.

Jake Stevenson (St. Cloud Rox) - Stats
Stevenson returned to St. Cloud for a second season after winning a Northwoods League title with the Rox last season, making his first appearance on July 1 with 2.0 innings of work. He has since made three relief appearances totaling 7.1 innings, striking out three batters.

Sam Thoresen (Waterloo Bucks) - Stats
Thoresen made a start in a doubleheader last week, suffering the defeat despite striking out five in 5.0 innings of work. This season, he's made six appearances including two starts, striking out 16 in 15.0 total innings.

Jack Wassel (Fond du Lac Dock Spiders) - Stats
Wassel enters Tuesday with a seven-game hitting streak, including a pair of 3-for-4 games over that span and has collected hits in 12 of his last 13 games overall. For the season, he's tearing the cover off the ball with a .400 average, 21 runs scored, eight RBIs, and five doubles while walking 17 times compared to just 13 strikeouts.

Eli Wilson (Willmar Stingers) - Stats
Wilson has been swinging a hot bat for Willmar over his last eight games, 11-for-24Â over the stretch of June 28 until July 8. For the year, he has one home run, two doubles, 13 runs scored, and six RBIs.

Brett Schulze (Hyannis Harbor Hawks) - Stats
Schulze has entered from the Hyannis bullpen four times over the last two weeks, striking out at least a batter in each appearance. He picked up his second save of the season with a hitless inning at Harwich as the Harbor Hawks won 4-3.

Easton Bertrand (Saugerties Stallions) - Stats
Bertrand displayed significant pop for the Stallions earlier this summer and has not slowed down, now with five home runs on the season and three doubles, driving in 12 runs so far while crossing the plate 11 times. He also has seven multi-hit games on the season.

Jacob Hitz (Saugerties Stallions) - Stats
Hitz has played in six games for the Stallions this summer, but has not appeared since June 22.

Jordan Kozicky (Saugerties Stallions) - Stats
Kozicky joined his pair of teammates on the Stallions back on June 26. After a slow start, he has hits in 5-of-6 games. Kozicky has scored eight times in eight games, slugged a pair of doubles and stole three bases already on the young season.

Riley Smith (Upper Valley Night Hawks) - Stats
Smith enters Tuesday on a three-game hitting streak, scoring a run last time out at Vermont. While he's batting just .190 on the season, he's struck out just eight times in 44 plate appearances, driving in three runs and cross the plate twice for Upper Valley.

Gabe Knowles (Badlands Big Sticks) - Stats
An Expedition League All-Star, Knowles also appeared in the Home Run Derby late last month. He continues to be one of the hottest hitters for Badlands since his season resumed on July 4. He drove in three runs in an 11-7 win against Hub City on July 6 and now has 17 RBI on the season while hitting .367 for the Big Sticks.

Max Meyer (Collegiate National Team) - Stats
Meyer picked up a pair of saves in Team USA's friendship series victory over Japan. He now has five saves in six appearances, striking out 13 in 6.0 innings of work. The USA Baseball CNT starts a series against Cuba in Havana on Tuesday night.

- Eduardo Estrada, Jr. (Litchfield Blues) and Sam Bridges (Stockmen's Irish) are each playing amateur baseball this summer.
- Incoming freshmen Zack Raabe and Riley Swenson are teammates on the BARC Industry Bullfrogs of the Skyline League of the Minnesota Baseball Association.
- Rookies Chase Stanke and Andrew Wilhite recently won a pair of tournaments, including the Perfect Game National 18U Tournament in Fort Myers, Florida. Both earned a spot on the All-Tournament squad.
- Freshman Noah Berghammer recently appeared in the Wisconsin State High School League All-Star Game, lifting a home run.
- Freshman Zack Elliott was the Minnesota PlayBall MVP, currently playing for the Eden Prairie Eagles American Legion team.
- Minnesota's last two rookie hurlers, Gus Radel and J.P. Massey, are pitching for the Sioux Falls Cyclones and the White Sox ACE program, respectively, as they prepare for their first collegiate go-around.
